Carb Clarification Needed

I have had one session with my Diabetic Nurse and she has left me confused. She talked about the need to reduce my carb intake for my recently diagnosed T2D. She gave me some rough guidance that Breakfast and Lunch should be 45 grams each and Dinner up to 75 grams of Carb. What I wasn't told was what is the overall Carbohydrate per day to allow for drinks and maybe a treat! I will be seeing her in just under two weeks for my second session. In the meantime I am keeping to the above figures and my weight has reduced from 14st 9lbs to 14st 4lbs in 8 days. I have also increased my exercising with more walking. I expect that the total carb level allowed must vary per individual but is there a rough ball park figure.

Hi Bob and welcome
Well for a lot of us here following a Low Carb Higher Fat diet it would be less than that.. maybe 100g carb for some.. . personally I try for under 20g per day. Are you taking any medication or purely diet controlled? I find that the lower the level of carbs then the less my sugars spike after eating. I aim for a rise of 1.5 mmol or less 2 hours after food and usually achieve this. Its up to you and how fast you prefer to get your sugars down. I also do some fasting which has the best short term impact on my level but I am a bit of an extremist.. haha

Hi @BobHewitt ,

No, there's no rough guideline. You must decide how much of the stuff you want to eat.

Bear in mind that the governments reference intake for a non diabetic is 260g. At the lower end, some people on the forums eat 1/10th of this. A moderate carb intake would be around 150ish.

Hi. First your nurse needs a medal for giving you some pretty good diet advice. How many carbs you eat will be up to you and the meter. I try to stay down to 150gm/day (but I'm on insulin) and many stay well below 100gm/day. I would start with 150gm/day and reduce it a bit if needed.

Carbs are the key unlike many thankfuly your nurse has put you on the right lines, but one of the things that I learned on this forum is that everybodies diabetes is different.

For me what worked was to initially try for zero carbohydrate intake (in the real world not really possible for 99.99 percent of us ) then slowly re-introduce some carbs while testing before and 2 hours after meals to see what worked for my T2.

I'm on a 20g per day for 12 weeks with intermittent weekly fasting. I was scared to death when I started it, thinking I would find it impossible. Because I am getting moderate protein and plenty of fat, I am satisfied all the time and have found it easy. All my metabolic markers (other than my HbA1c) have moved into the non-diabetic range, although I am of course still diabetic. Good luck as you begin your journey. With focus and determination you have every chance of success.
