Carb confusion

I'm a mum to a 4 year old little diabetic girl, I'm jus wondering is there any reason there's a lot of talk about low carb meals / recipes etc? I carb count and never care how many as long as I work it out I give appropriate insulin!?

I don't even need to 'count carbs'. (I wouldn't have a clue how to do that, either.)

I almost always take exactly the same insulin, and I test my blood sugar quite a lot - around once per waking hour, on average. (I mostly use visually read strips, rather than a meter.)

I have never had a weight problem.

The only repetitive bit is that I eat around 220g of rye bread per day. (I don't eat any after 4.00pm, or my blood sugar would rise in the evening and overnight.) This is quite repetitive too: I almost always eat it with Biona Pear & Apple Spread!

I eat other stuff too. Indeed I eat very well. But it's the rye bread that enables me to SAFELY achieve a typical HbA1c reading of 27mmol/mol - a non-diabetic normal.

The reason is that the prevailing opinion on this forum is that current medical advice is all completely wrong, and that you need to disregard it and follow their favoured fad diet instead.

Hello!

Returning to your original question, MOST (but not all) of these posts are by T2s who use low carb diets to control their diabetes. Some T1s will also low carb.

However, the doctors aren't so keen on it usually. Whether that's right or not I'm not willing to pass judgement!

For a growing 4 year old I would not consider low carb without full medical support.

I, like you, count carbs so far as to dose insulin correctly. But I do not restrict them.

I hope that helps :)

Thanks I was startin to panic a bit I was mayb being ignorant to amount if carbs! But I guess cause she's type 1 then it's ok jus to give watever carbs to insulin to keep her healthy tank you!

There are many T1s that do chose to go down the low carb route also. The main reason being less carb = less insulin required = less chance of making a mistake

At 4 years old I would let her be as normal as possible. No child should be going mad on sweets and sugar anyway, so I'm sure she's getting a healthy balanced diet from you. If there was a concern your doctor would guide you

Will I guess less carbs less insulin and more accurate I never thought of that!
But yeh I do try to keep her as healthy as I can but obvs as a child she still needs to feel normal by havin treats! I tink it was more the she would hav cereal at breakfast time bread at lunch pototoes/pasta/rice noodles at dinner and mayb more bread for super I was worrying that wit all this talk of low carb meals she was havin to many but I do try to keep her diet as it was before as much as possible as it's been hard enough for her last few months without starting to restrict her diet further !

This is not the prevailing opinion of this forum at all. There are those that support LCHF and there are those that don't limit carbs at all. There are also many who lie somewhere in between the two. Some can be very voracious in their opinions and assume what works for themselves will work for everyone else too. This is also incorrect. Ultimately, don't ignore all medical dietary advice, some of it is OK. Listen to it and experiment yourself until you see what works for you.

Alex, I do not understand why you feel the need to make continuous attacks on people who eat LCHF. Many of us believe that you should eat what works for you, whether that is LCHF, low GI or the NHS recommended diet, as we are all individuals and different things work for us all.
I have at times criticised the lack of advice I have received " you're diabetic. Take these tablets and look on the internet - you'll find advice on food there.". I think the limited advice was dangerous and irresponsible. I think that some of the personal remarks which members have reported HCPs for saying are also unhelpful and unprofessional.
As Mo says, there is a mixture of people here who all do different things and are T1 or T2. There is nothing wrong with people saying what works for them.
To return to the original poster, I believe that ElyDave is a T1 who eats fairly low carb - you could ask him. There is also a section for children and parents here where someone may be able to answer your question. Lots of the young people I teach (we have had many discussions) eat the NHS healthy plate and inject accordingly. They are however teenagers. A friend of a friends son has recently been diagnosed as t1 and he is 9. He follows the NHS healthy plate. Hope this helps.

Good to know, when I said I did not do LCHF, it was not easy to say it on this site....:/
Some people sent me messages to say they did not post because they also did not do the LCHF, some had received personal messages which had been uplpeaseant ...some thought I was brave to speak up....
It is really mixed, I believe I am a bit of everything , I am not really anything, I do what is right for my health needs, what I don't like is not be being heard for who I am....I hear everyone, we are all individuals with different needs....glad we are not cloned ;)

This is equally unacceptable. It is a pity that people who received unpleasant messages did not report them to the moderator. Knowing how fair the lovely Mo is, I'm sure he would have done something to help anyone who was in receipt of an unpleasant post.

People were just sharing with me in pm ....it used to happen....

We don't know if they reported it themselves.....we can't assume....

I like what mo has written today, reminds us were are all different :)

It also considers that medical assistance should not always be ignored this helps new people, I was new a while ago..... :)

Hi,
I'm a type 1 and I low carb. As others have said it is pretty much for the reason of less carbs = less insulin = less mistakes.

I have found it stops my blood sugar swinging from high to low and has reduced the number of hypos I get.

However it isn't for everyone and with such a young child I would definitely ask for support in changing to a low carb diet IF you ever decided it was something you and your child wanted to try.

I totally agree with the other posters that say this is an individual choice and you should only do the things that benefit your child.

Hope that helps!

I would fully agree with the advice that Hale kindly give you, there's no reason why your daughter should follow a low-carb diet.

Think the thread got a a bit lost for a moment, sorry sbout that....put your daughter first x

Tanks to you all I do tend to work from the food plate / food pyramid so I guess as long as she is healthly and nat to high r to low I can't b getting it to rong lol but mayb low carb would b sumting to tink about in the future but if it's nat vital I tink ill stick to letting her b a normal little girl for another wile that can enjoy a less restricted diet but thank you all for your help..... Mayb wen I'm better educated ill b joinin in these debates and hav my own option to share lol tanks again ;) x
