Carb counting Question

Sorry if this has been asked before...

Am looking at packets / tins etc and so I believe I need to look at how much carbohydrate it contains

Now, is this per 100g, or serving or of the whole thing?

Also, I believe I need to check how much of that sugars too...so same question ...is that per 100g, serving or all

thanks

Any UK packets give the nutrition data. What you need to look at is the total carb content, that includes any ADDED sugars. You do not need to just look at sugars as that would be misleading.

This is usually shown as xxx carbs per 100g weight of product.

If the portion that you are eating is say 40g and the product has 15g carbs per 100g then a simple calculation gives you the actual carb count of your portion.

Therefore: 15/100 x 40 = 6g carbs per portion. Simple really ! :D

It is Ken if good at maths LOL

No, that seems fair enough, so am looking really at portion and carb content...ta muchly

I think products have to give the per 100g values by law, but many also give per serving values, so make sure you are looking at the right column. I find it's easier to be consisitent and always look at the per 100g column.

Wow, just checked a gluten free roll & am shocked at the carb content of this tiny roll!!

There is 49.3 carb per 100g

A roll is 75g

so, going off the way to calculate as above

49.3/100 x 75 = 36.975

Is that right Ken?

It sure is ! Well done on cracking the Math's. :D

This is where for me I would only have HALF the roll and some protein and salad perhaps. I always go by portion sizes. I still get the taste and variety of foods, just less of it.

Ken

yer I understand more and more now

But wow, such a small roll and to only have half of it LOL

How many carbs should one be aiming for? or is that like how long is a piece of string question?

How many Carbs........? Definitely a string job !

As far as I am concerned it is the number of Carbs you can tolerate which gives you good Bg levels and good control. Some people eat little or no carbs.....they are happy with that. I did that when I first started but since losing so much weight I now can eat more than my initial 30g per day.

My own personal levels are now between 60 - 80g carbs per day but this can fluctuate depending on what I aim to achieve. Weight loss perhaps and/or Bg control.

It is very much an individual choice and I don't recommend any figures as we are all different.

A friend took me out for lunch the other day, thinking she was being good to me she took me to a crepe house that did gluten free crepes. I didn't want to uspet her and had never tried one before so i gave it a go. I even cut off and left the edges and folded over bits, my BG rose for over 3 hours and stayed high, it went into double figures. :(

I do normally achieve under 8.5 after 2 hours but that day I was 12 for a long time and I felt sick. Never again with the gluten free stuff. I'll just manage without.

Crepes contain flour and are usually covered in sugar as well so that is probably why your Bg numbers soared.

It was gluten free as I can't eat wheat and savoury, filled with garlic mushrooms and spinach, so no sugar. But the gluten free seems to spike me even more that wheat did. ANother failed experiment!

Gluten free means it was made with some other kind of flour but these may not necessarily be low in carbs. For instance rice flour which is often used has quite a few carbs.

That's why I've been experiementing, I am newish to being wheat intolerant, and I haven't tried much as they are high carb, but thought my friends thoughtfulness was an opportunity to try.

I can do the gram flour that they use in indian cooking and the small amount of corn flour in thickening something, but then I can eat corn on the cob where others can't. Aren't our bodies wierd things?

Breton savoury crepes (galettes) are normally made with buckwheat which is gluten free. The ready made ones I buy have about 15 carbs each in them.
