Hiya guys,
It was suggested I come talk to you all for some advice. I was diagnosed with 2 autoimmune diseases when I was 11, diabetes type 1 and something called ulcerative colitis which affects my digestive system. Long story short Ive had surgery to remove my colon (large bowel). I have struggled to get my insulin dosages right since, and my carb counting is hit and miss, I think my rate of food absorption varies day by day but I have no way of proving this or working out how to adjust my dosages correctly. I have to chose between having my sugars run at a higher level or to continually have hypos. Is anyone on here in a similar situation or know anyone who is like me? I could really do with some suggestions. TIA

Hey and welcome @LadyPaprika

Sorry I don't have any much knowledge of colon removal, except to ask if you are under the care of a consultant with this ? Thought process being that if they gave you a continuous glucose monitor to track your results as well as using a diary that they may be able to look at food types, carbs eaten and glucose reaction. If trends can be used they may be able to suggest a way forward for you in your insulin use whether it's say using a fast acting insulin for food or even using a pump therapy.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Hi thank u for being so welcoming!

I currently see a diabetic team of doctor, nurses and dietician at the hospital. They don't really have any experience with my situation and just tell me to trial and error and record which I am doing. I have been put down for the DAFNE course which I'm really excited about and we are looking into using an insulin pump and the freestyle libre as I pass the needed criteria but that won't be for a bit yet as the hospital is struggling with appointments. These can only be prescribed by the doctor not the nurses and I don't see him till the end of the year.
I'm supposed to see a gastroenterologist team for my ulcerative colitis but never received any appointments once I had finished receiving my abdominal surgeries. I thought this was normal but have been told recently that I should still see them a minimum of once a year, so am on the waiting list to see them again. Hopefully they may have suggestions
