Carb counting

Hello Saffie, I didn`t carb count before ,but it does make a big difference by taking regular balanced nutritional food , low in carbs . There is an excellent section on this web site about carbs , and useful clips . Just had 21 g of carbs for lunch . so that should be ok , its a minefield , this diabetes situation . You will crack it !!!! Good luck !! :D
Type 2 diet only .

My son is now having to carb count, I have no idea as to where to start :-(

If you go onto Amazon they sell a book called "Collins gem carb counter". It's only about £3-£4 and makes starting to learn about carbs much easier. It's only small, so easily carried in a bag or pocket for when you go out.

I am following the BDEC course it is very good, complex but well worth persevering. In addition I bought off Amazon Carbs and Cals and a cheap kitchen scales ( Argos ) BDEC course is where to start though!

Lucy. :)

There are no set amounts. The best thing to do is try half the recommended daily amount, which is around 125g for a woman, and see how you get on. I am very intolerant so ultra low carb at around 20g a day. It really is a case of eat test and learn, eat to your meter, that will tell you the amount of carbs you can tolerate.

I haven't checked out any of your other posts, but assume that your son is young and new to diabetes?

The amounts being given to you about how much insulin to use at the moment might change, as you get used to carb counting, and effects of insulin etc can be seen..

But another book that is handy to get hold of, that goes through the carb counting regime or should I say, multiple injections a day or basal/bolus.. Is a book called Using Insulin by John Walsh, this will underpin the bedec on-line course, plus will give you a wealth of information concerning controlling blood glucose levels, and how to work corrections needs, insulin to carb rations etc are all worked out..

I have the book Carbs and Cals and the Collins pocket carb counter. I also have these scales http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Nutrien ... 686&sr=8-1. They are expensive but definitely worth it in my opinion as they actually allow you to weigh food in carbs. The Diabetic Friend app for the iphone or iPod touch also has the carb content of some foods from well known chains of restaurants and cafes in the UK such as Costa Coffee.

Thanks to everyone who has been helping me on this, just to let you know we are no longer carb counting. My sons DN and I both think he is too young to be doing this at this time. He is only 7 and was only diagnosed last December. :D
