Hi

I feel so stupid asking this. I had some rice and on the box it said 61g of carbs per 100g uncooked and when it was cooked I weighed it and it weighed 150g. The rice absorbs water whilst cooking so this is why it weighs more right? but do the carbs decrease or increase when it is cooked or does it stay the same?

The carbs will decrease further because some of the starch will go into the water which you drain away. With rice we find it's really just a guide and is never an accurate science because how long you cook for also varies the carb content slightly. For white long grain rice we work on 28g carbs per 100g of cooked rice. I don't steam rice but I should think steaming compared to boiling will also make a difference to the carb content.

Hi! Sophiaw is right about the cooked/uncooked differences, but I'm very surprised at the carbs you allow per 100 grams unless it's an insulin thing? I use basmati rice, generally accepted as lower in carbs and GI than most, but even that is 30.6 grams carbs per 100 cooked. Some manufacturers look at carbs per portion and consider 50 grams a portion, so wonder if you looked at that?

Oops, sorry my error. I double checked my little print out thingy that I keep in the kitchen and it's 28g carbs per 100g cooked rice. I was getting muddled up with boiled potatoes which we calculate at 16g per 100g. I'll go and edit my original post to correct it, sorry about that :D
