Carb level

About 10%. So for a 100g weight of a food look for 10g of carbs. Some people go higher and a few go lower. It is important to find a number that you are comfortable with and remember, there is leeway when you have meals that contain foods with differing carb values.

Are you on any meds?
Are you testing at home before and after meals with a meter?
What are your blood sugar readings?

It also depends on the portion size of the food item, you may have a food item that is only 10% carbs but to satisfy your hunger you might have to eat 200g of it, but then again another item that's 20% carbs might only need 50g to fill you up.

For new foods always test you BG before eating and then again sometime(~2hrs) after to see what affect it has had on your BG.

What sort of range should I be looking for on foods. With carbs in max
I've never looked at carbs in a %/100g as mentioned. But I do factor in GI and the total amount (weight per day - ie 180g).

Agree with @slip on the testing though, definitely sound advice. Some carbs agree with your BG better, usually the lower GI ones. Although GI is pretty useless by itself as we very rarely eat one type of food (macro) in isolation. So a meal has an accumulated GI, food for thought - you can be crafty with it and make it work for you:)

How long's a piece of string? I find for me it's more about how many per meal rather than total consumed. I get about 50g a day but if I ate that 50g all at once I'd spike massively. Instead I spread them out throughout the day, and that seems to work.

Sandwich thin on its own? Fine. Banana on its own? Fine. Both together? Double figures, baby!

So that's exactly 20 grams then.

Ha ha ha no I should of worded it better. I don't go over 20 grams but I wont deprive myself by going under if I can help it. Although sometimes I may if I don't eat lunch.being lazy lol

In the early days of following a low carb diet I used a meter to understand what various foods and quantities did to my blood sugar - now I know what to eat so don't need to count carbs. I started this way of eating 6 years ago, lost weight to get to a normal BMI & am not really 'diabetic' any more so it worked for me!

Hi Drummer - It sounds like you may be pretty new to diabetes, or new to adjusting your diet.

It could be helpful for you to have a look at the site's structured Low Carb Programme.

Low Carb Program - it's made front-page news of the New Scientist and The Times. Developed with 20,000 people with type 2 diabetes; 96% of people who take part recommend it... find out why.

As well as just there, you can find the link in my and every other mod's profile signature.

Good luck with it all.
