Okay forum guru's,

Which bit is more important; the carbohydrate amount OR the "of which sugars" amount?

For example, just bought a new snack to try at Asda - Besana Roasted Soya Nuts (Besana is the name of the brand, not some fancy roasting method :) ). The label says:

Carbohydrate = 28.8g (per 100g)

of which sugars = 5.26g

Whilst the former seems high to me the latter seems ok; or am I missing something? :?

I asked the same question on here some time ago, and the answer from the learned one was all carbs turn to sugar (glucose) so you take notice of the first figure not the of which sugars one. :)

Thanks for the speedy replies.

Ok, I'm sat at my PC now munching on these roasted soya beans. Are these an "acceptable" foodstuff for folks with betes or do the aforementioned figures make these a No No?

Bag contains 100g Ken, but I've stopped eating these halfway through

As you are low carbing that would be a lot for a snack........it's a lot for me. 14.4g carbs. I weigh things like that so I know exactly how many carbs I am having.

That's willpower :!:

Not really Daisy, I've also eaten 5 green Peperami's as well.

They have hardly any carbs per stick (0.6g) but I'm sure they're full of junk. :(

I get those Ardbeg - I get mine from M&S though - no Asda here - The ones I get are probably similar in carbs - have none in at the moment so can't check - I weigh out 20g which will probably be about 5g carb - that's my usual snack limit. they are very moreish though so need only to have them when willpower is up to warp speed

As to total carbs - I go by total carbs but also check how much of it is sugar - if its more than 5g of sugars per 30g carb I tend to steer clear - depending what it is, why I'm eating it and how much I am going to eat - confusing ain't it :?

I think you are making it more confusing for yourself. By concentrating on 'sugars' you are missing the point. You do only need to look at the total carbs......forget the sugars. Read below, something I posted the other day in response to a similar comment.

Just remember that on nutrition labels in the UK Total Carbs includes the added sugars .......

Sugar is a simple carbohydrate.

Added sugars are sugars and syrups that are added to foods or beverages during processing or preparation. They do not include naturally occurring sugars such as those found in milk (lactose) and fruits (fructose). Added sugars (or added sweeteners) include natural sugars (such as white sugar, brown sugar and honey) as well as other sweeteners that are chemically manufactured.

I hope that has cleared things up a little. Total carbs is what you need to consider as a Diabetic, because they convert 100% to Glucose in the blood stream which will raise your Bg level. This then needs Insulin to lower the levels, Insulin from your own Pancreas and/or injected to counteract the rise.

Thanks Ken :D - I get your point and yes I may have confused things for others - my apologies if I have- I do concentrate on total carbs never just sugars -but I don't think you can just ignore the sugars totally (my opinion)- what I was trying to say was if a lot of the carbs were sugars I stay clear - eg if it has 15g of carbs of which 10g are sugars I will avoid it or eat a very small amount- I don't find it complicated and it works for me - I eat complex carbs following low G.I and low G.L principles - maybe I am not explaining myself well. :(
