Carbohydrates give me depression recently

I recently stopped drinking altogether, I'm not an alcoholic, I just drank too much 3 or 4 times a week for years and decided to stop. After a few weeks not drinking I thought I'd do things in moderation and I had three pints of beer one night (my usual amount was about 5 pints on about 4 nights a week) and woke next morning to a severe depression. This subsided eventually but when I ate some pizza which I shouldn't have done (I have a gluten allergy) it came back. Now, whenever I eat even complex carbs I get a return of this awful depression which can last all day though sometimes it comes in waves and is varying in severity. Could it be that my insulin isn't doing what it should somehow, perhaps insulin resistance? I'm not diabetic but there is something wrong with my metabolism somewhere. Has anyone any advice, I'd greatly appreciate any? My blood tests came back fine but I have not had any for insulin monitoring or the like.

Hi Keni, I have never heard of carbs making one ill with depression? I am no expert but I would say it might be attributed to you giving up alcohol, remember beer contains a certain amount of carbs. Why not mention this to your DN or Doctor next time you see them, it may mean you need further treatment.

Hello Kay, the fact is that if I don't eat carbs then I'm fine. twenty minutes or so after eating them the depression starts. I'm assuming there is a link with the fact that eating carbs produces or should produce insulin. Perhaps my insulin is going wrong somewhere. Thanks a lot for your reply, I appreciate it. I may need a glucose tolerance test or the like but I'm banking on an appointment i have with an endocrinologist. Have you any idea of whether it is possible to eat healthily with almost no carbs? - at least for 8 weeks or so until iI see the endocrinologist. Below is a possible explanation copied from a website though probably it is only one of many which are possible. Not sure if it applies.
"Some people make too much insulin, and this is called hyperinsulinemia or insulin imbalance. It can cause your blood sugar to go too low, making you feel tired and hungry for more food, even though you may just have eaten. Too much insulin also makes it easier for your body to store energy as fat, and harder for your body to break down your fat stores when you try to lose weight.

If you continually produce too much insulin, your cells can become insensitive to it. This is called insulin resistance. You produce more and more insulin but it has less and less effect. This causes sugar to build up in your blood and sometimes to spill over into your urine. Eventually, your pancreas can become worn out. At this point you are no longer able to produce enough insulin, and have become a type 2 diabetic. If you have insulin resistance, you may sometimes be referred to as -pre-diabetic for this reason."

If you are looking for very low carb recipes, hunt up some of the Atkins diet books( your library will have them) the fats in them won't hurt you

Hi Keni

Many people on the forum eat very little in the way of starchy carbs and have done so for a long time. I can't eat them without my BG levels going sky high so I don't and feel much better for it! :D
