Carbs per Day.

Type 2 , Always check the label on the front of the food to make sure that the sugar content is in the green/amber , what figure should I be looking at regarding the carbs, most of the time the figures seem high. Cheers

I think you should be counting the grams of carbs a day... like maybe 80 grams of carbs a day in total, and avoid the fast spiking kinds of carbs.. which is those high in the glychemic index, like starch and all kinds of sugars and also fruit sugars..

there are a few other ingredients like fibres and fats that slows down the uptake of glucose, so that it doesn´t spike your blood as fast as if the kind of foods did not contain fats or/and fibres naturally..

but all kinds of carbs spike ones blood and therefor the collected amount of carbs DO MATTER A LOT TOO.

but berries that naturally do have a lot of fibres in them are to be prefered for other kinds of fruits like bananas and oranges and mangoes and also apples...
many use their knowledge of fats and fibres and then choose to eat berries with cream, where both the fibres and the cream slows the uptake time of the carbs and in that way prevents the spiking a lot...

also proteins (but in a very slow rate ) will be tranformed into glucose by ones liver if eaten in very high amount like more than 0.8-1.0 gram pro kg body-weight... so fats are really the only kind that hardly isn´t able to spike blood glucose at all

some say to that question about 5 grams of carbs pro 100 grams.... but I would say it depends on all the other ingredients, if it is a very nutrient condenced food I would sometimes eat it even though there is much more carbs in it, cause I need healthy foods , healthy in other aspects than "low-carbs" but I do Count ALL CARBS, ALL DAY

sometimes I do eat apple, but then chose to only eat a half apple... = half the amount = half the spike
 
A normal carb diet intake is between 225 & 325
Lower carb diets tend to aim for 100 to 150
Some low carbers aim for no more than 20
The green label is following the 225/325 diet
Most processed food are higher in carbs so it is better to go as natural as possible
 
Don't check the front of the packet.
ALL carbs turn to blood glucose, so the amount of sugar is irrelevant.
You want the amount of carbohydrate, listed on the back of the packet, not the front.
(that silly traffic light system is useless to diabetics, since it ignores the carbs and just focusses on sugars, which are only part of the issue)

And yes, the figures are usually high - especially on processed foods.
Best to go back to scratch, and cook from basic fresh ingredients.
Sad but true.

As for how many carbs? People vary hugely with their carb-tolerances, I am afraid. Some need to be under 20g carbs a day, others are happy at over 150g carbs a day.
 
The only way to check how many carbs you can cope with is to test your BG after 2 hours after eating

How many carbs you eat is a very individual thing and depends on both your "level" of diabetes and the goals you wish to achieve: in general you should eat few enough carbs to reduce and keep your glucose levels down at a reasonable and stable level. So, whatever quantity works for you, and most importantly, is maintainable long term. Use your meter to work out how you react to different foods/carbs, and adjust your diet and set your targets accordingly.

If you want to try a low carb high(er) fat diet, then you should aim for a maximum of 100-150g carbs a day, but as already mentioned, some people choose, or need, to eat (sometimes a lot) fewer carbs; my body prefers under 50g, and I usually eat between 30-40g without feeling deprived, and have managed this level happily for around 3 years now.

If I want to lose weight my carbs have to be below 20g.
I can happily maintain weight on 30g to 40g
I will gain weight over that.
On any of those my BG is stable and mostly between 5 and 7 ... apart from that ruddy morning liver dump of approx 7.5
It's very individual and you'll find what spikes your BG may not do it in someone else.
 
Oh those traffic light markings are no use at all, you need to look for the actual amount of carbohydrate, on the side or back of the pack, often quite well hidden.
And sometimes needing a magnifying glass to read....:wideyed::mad:
