Don't you all get hungry during the day. I work as a nurse 3am-3pm three days a week and then usually pick up 3am-7am 3 days a week. At the moment, I have been on a leave of absence because I had ankle surgery so have been sedentary and perhaps this is why I can't even image only eating 20g carbs per day. I already feel like I am starving my self on 90g of carbs. I am thankful for all your comments.
Just to draw a few themes on this thread together, I thought I'd reply.
As diabetics, we all have different levels of insulin resistance. This is why some diabetics can eat 150+ grams of carbs per day, while others have to eat under 20g. Personally, I can eat up to about 40g split over 2 or 3 meals, without any meaningful or detrimental impact on my blood glucose levels. However, I eat in the 20-30g range, mostly because this is how I've just naturally come to enjoy consuming food, but also as a "safety" feature of my diet to allow for where food packaging might not be correct. By using a blood glucose meter, testing before a meal, then two hours after your first bite, in time you'll be able to work out your "safe" carb intake range.
Some don't track food intake around here, I do (I'm a data and stats geek). Calories are not a primary target for me, but my app tracks them. What I can tell you is that I've done a million diets previously, every single one has failed. On previous low fat / high carb diets, I've always calorie counted as the primary target, generally consuming a hard limit of 1800 calories. These diets have failed because I've always been hungry. I was "king of the snacks" on previous diets, believing that eating regularly in smaller amounts was better than meals. On my low carb diet, my app tells me that I've eaten an average of 1606 calories per day in the past 2 weeks. The only times I'm hungry are in the hour or so before dinner, or when I smell food being prepared (these two factors often overlap admittedly). I eat 2 meals most days, 3 on active days, and I don't snack except for really active days when I might need to dial up intake a little. My food cravings and demons have significantly reduced on low carb. I've lost 3st 10lbs (23kg) since the 21st July. My blood glucose is managed without medication and all diabetes symptoms have gone. I've been taken off 2 of my 3 blood pressure meds, only 1 left now. More than anything, I'm happier.
I know it all sounds crazy. I wouldn't have believed any of this before I was diagnosed with diabetes and tried it. There's a general perception that low carb, especially keto, is just red meat, bacon, eggs and cheese, but it doesn't have to be. No two people's low carb diets are the same, low carb can be very flexible and it's possible to tailor it to your preferences pretty easily.
