Hi I have been a known diabetic for 25yrs with very poor control. I am still finding it very difficult to cope. I had eye surgery (Catarat & Vitrectomy surgery) the plastic lens unfortunately is coming out of the bag and touching my iris this has been since June 2010. I have had several visit to the eye casualty with severe pain and inflamation and my consultant and it just seem to be swept under the table. I did some research and got the understanding the displace lens should be corrected within 3 months after surgery. The coindition was never discussed with me and when i started asking questions my appointments keep on getting cancelled and rebooked with my consultant even though i was been pussed to sign a consent for in August of last year because apparently i need to have my next eye done i havent seen my consultant since October of last year.

Very poor care bevvy and you need to go back to the Ophthalmology clinic and demand some answers to what they intend to do with your eye, perhaps discussing your concerns with your gp first and getting them to write a letter in advance might be helpful.

Very worrying for you bevvy. So sorry to hear that. I wonder if there are staffing problems ie not enough consulants or some other problem at your hospital?
Could you get your GP o refer you elsewhere? he/ she may know what is going on.
When appointments are constantly cancelled there is generally some underlying cause. Your hospital will probably have a website. See if you can glean any information from that.
When my husband had an achilles endon rupure a few years ago his appointments kept changing. A little research came up with the fact he consultant had left and everything was left in limbo. I suppose hey dont like to lose patients but some higs can't wait.
Bes of luck. It can't be any fun. I have had a caaract op myself which has never been very comfortable.. Good luck. Hope your Gp can help.

Hi Noblehead and Unbeliever thanks for the response. I have raised my concern on many occasions to my former GP who has now retired I continue to voice my discomfort and pain to the consultant in the diabetic clinic at the hospital and I was told by one female doctor that she was aware of my disease and that the surgeons downstairs was very good nextthing I was sent a questionnaire from a shrink from there on I am feeling a lot of anger. Eventually I count stand the brush off anymore I asked one of the doctors from the surgical team what could be done about the constant inflammation and he told me its gonna be difficult as we cannot find your notes I went on to see the consultant at the same appointment and he looke into my eye and said the cornea is cloudy and there is a lot of flare I wonder why and I felt very insulted. Even though my vision was getting worse they would write to my GP the I was making good progress. Another doc from the team on a follow up app when I raised my concern again said in a don't bother me sort of tone we know you are going to need further surgery but we don't think it is urgent. I honestly hate these people with a passion. I don't trust anyone at the moment. I was told the surgery went Ccording to plan and that I wouldn't be needing a second one I am now seeing someone from the glaucoma clinic and at the corneal clinic aswel I also get to understand the pressure has constantly been too high and they won't treating me for it I am one unhappy person right now because I am scared of these people that are suppose to be caring for me

Its all a matter of rust isn't it. If you have a new GP could you perhaps approach him/her and telll them how you feel?

It sounds as hough someone needs to take the ime to sit down with you and explain properly just what is going on..

I think "they" often don't realise how frightened people can be when they feel that others are making decisions which affect them and they are not given adequate explanations,

I know that there is no communication at all between my Gp and the hospital. In your place I would ask the new GP tp write to the hospital on your behalf to explain your concerns . Sounds like a case of "too many cooks". There may well be good reasons for their decisions but they are not communicating them very well to the person who really matters - you.

Do you et angry with them or do you just feel that way? if you feeel so frusrated theat your anger shows- perhaos towards he wrong peple it might be unhelpful as hey will be even more reluctant o speak to you.
I shold certainly seek your Gps help but if you don't want o do hat try being very calm next ime you go to the hospital but explain that you are very upset and apprehensive as you feel you don't know what is going on and noone has given you an adequate eplanation.
You really shouldn't be left feeling this way. Your GP can't refuse to help or advise you and may be able to help you maake sense of it I hope so. I can almost "hear" your desperaion. le us know how you get on.

Thank you Unbeliever I have spoken to my new GP even though the were getting correspondence from the hospital it seem it all just went into my file without a second glance I was getting frustrated with my group practice so I went to complain to the manager she gave me the opportunity to choose a GP at the practice I was comfortable with has my GP for 23yrs had retired so she gave me an extra long app so I could talk which we did she said the hospital was happy with my progress after surgery I took my glasses off and ask her if she think this was progress she told me to hold on while she take a look at my notes she was t very happy with whatever was on the system she said I can see you have. Visiting the hospital very often your vision is getting worse but they haven't said what treAtment you are on or even if they are going to correct it straight. Away she dictated a letter to the consultant who called me in a week before I was due to see him that was the last time I saw him and the. Dry first time after 16months that he sat me down and actually told me that ideally the lens should be sitting behind my iris but Half is I front and half behind Nd he can tell me why I get the pain and running watery eye because my corrnea was Swollen so he put me on to the corneal specialist who told me my cornea was ok it was the twisted lens touching my iris that was causing the prob and rthat from previous visit he can zzee that the pressure is took high T one stage it was 30 and they haven't. been treating it up to that point I was seeing the consultant every 4wks. I am totally the opposite I will sit there and don't speak waiting to be told what is going on I am agitated before I see them just praying that they will tell me something if they had been honest with me and treated me with a bit of respect by keeping me up to date with my condition in the early stage I ask him a question and he completely ignored me or they speak to their colleagues over my head so I would go home and go on the net to get a full understanding of what was going on with me I am 46 and my complications are endless I can't see or read with or without my glasses. I am so sorry to be burdening you with my troubles but no one have the time or patience to listen to me and I do appreciate your kindness

The positive in your situation is that your new GP did try to help and knows that were right to be concerned. She should be able to back you up if you want to take the matter further or even ask to be referred o another hospuital.
Your descripion of doctors talking over your head and your having o go home anfd look things up on the internet will be familiar to many of us I am sure.

I wonder if your GP;s comments in rying o sort your problem caused hem to send you that questionnaire.?

In your place I think I would give asking a question another ry in the first place, If you tend to sit here quietly they many think you dn't really want o know what is going on and that makes life asier for them.
CDont bombard thenm with quesions, just write down the most important question when you go to see the relevant person and make a point of asking it. Tell them it has been really worrying you. If this doesn't work go back to your GP . Tell her what happened and that you feel you are geitng nowhere Ask if it is possible for you to be referred elsewhere. Unfortunately Gps and hospitals no longer seem to cooperate.

I have he feeling that your problem could be sorted iout if you could only get to the righ person. if nothing else your Gp should be able to advise you how you can get some sense from the ospital. have you tried asking PALS. It is usually possible to contact them by email.
I should try them directly once more . They surely can't refuse to answer a direct question of such importance o you.
You just need o know what is going on and how and when they propose o treat you don' you?
If you get nowhere you could maybe try your local social services or the charities dealing with impaired vision. They should be able to advise and help you.
Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your advise after feeling so down and out yesterday tonight I am smiling thankful for your response and advise. The question air was sent months before I spoke to my GP. I have spoken to pals and wrote to the chief exc after which the consultant wrote me a letter given light to some concern but what bothers me most they haven't answer my question why after so many visits to the eye casualty with the same probs after surgery no one bother to properly investigate and do the corrective surgery which is recommended. My GP ask if I wanted to go elsewhere but as you know I feel they are all the same. I am very new to the forum so I am not clear on your story but you did for me in one day what my doctors couldnt do in 25yrs

Aaah , thank YOU bevvy.! I don't seem to have helped much but your story ouched a chord wih me. Different experiences but the same feeling sometimes.

I wonder if you wouldn' consider going elsewhere? They may be all the same in some ways but you may just meet someone with a different approach and your GP seems prepared o help.

Just hink , they will be presented with your problem as it is now and be able to take it from there. Good luck in whatever you decide to do and I hope hings improve for you soon, :)

Good morning Unbrliever pls believe me when I said you have boost my confidence giving me reason to rethink my ee evaluate my trust in the NHS.
