Only for tomorrow mind, all as a result of going to surgery for annual check up

As always I like to post succinctly ;) here goes

Hello Mrs Pleasantly Nice how are you ?

I'm fine thank you - but curious why I didn't have a blood test before this appointment

Oh wern't you, I wonder why? .......... ahh I see, you're not on any medication now so they won't ask for a blood test

Oh! Well what about my HbA1c ?

Well Mrs Nice your result last year was 4.3 so everything is perfectly normal but tell me why are you so interested you are not diabetic ?

Well I test myself and I know I can't eat pasta, of cake without my readings being over 10 after 2 hours

OK well Mrs I'm liking you less - You shouldn't be testing - you are just getting random readings, they don't mean anything

Well they mean that I don't eat pasta but anyway how are they random when Type 1's do it to monitor insulin dosage

Oh well Type1's are a different kettle of fish and they know how much insulin to take

Shall we do your BP now ?

Oh Mrs Are You calming down Nice ... Well its a little high 158/77

Really? - I expect its 'cos I am a little stressed at the minute

Oh dear Mrs I can see you're not really calming down What is it you are stressed about ?

Well this is supposed to be my annual review, I haven't had a blood test - which means you don't know whether in the last year I have controlled my sugar levels or not there has been no cholesterol test done and in spite of last year having a note that I was drinking fare too much alcohol - no liver function either
So it seems the purpose of me coming all the way here, snarled up in traffic, trying to get here on time was just so that you could tell me my BP is a little high

Okay Mrs Stroppy ..... If it would ease your mind I could send you for a blood glucose test

Really?

Yes and then if we need to we could do an HbA1c after that - would that be helpful?

Yes I'm sure it would

Now Mrs You do seem to have chilled a bit ... what erm does your husband say about your wine drinking?

... .. Moving mouth - nothing coming out .......I'm sorry what do you mean

Well Mrs O M G I've set you off again - I just wondered if he umm said anything to you

Well yes sometimes he'll ask if he can have some - is that what you mean?

I was wondering Mrs Oh **** why did I have to have this one - Have you thought about joining a group in respect of you're over drinking

What like AA?

Yes, yes they can be very helpful - I've got a lovely old lady who I see, she's 82 she's not got a problem now but she still goes along to help the new ones

Well I'll certainly think about it - is that it?

Erm Mrs Not committed and Awkward - What about making an appointment to come back in a couple of weeks so we can monitor your BP?

No I think I'll be fine when I'm home and calmer

WHAT IS THE BL**DY POINT ?

Well there we are, our fantastic NHS

So one day this week I shall be having Cereals (have to go buy some) with at least 2 pieces of toast (have to buy some) with lashings of marmalade(have to buy that too), then trotting down to the phlebotomy girlies to get my blood glucose tested ( lets hope I don't get a random result - like what I gets at home !! )

Good health all

Gilly x

Your post rang quite a few bells , good luck with the cereal , toast and marmalade , drooling at the thought :)

glad to have amused ....... if only it was funny and I didn't have to cause damage to myself to get the point across :(

Love your style , why o why do we take our diabetes so seriously when not even the NHS can give a ****????:mad:

I know it's serious, sorry, you just wrote about it so entertainingly :)

I've sometimes been reduced to feeling I'm just going to stuff with carbs too, and raise my glucose levels out of spite before my next review so that I get a bit more help rather than the brush off I got last time, but then I think maybe he won't give a **** either way - and all I'm doing is harming myself.. And I don't actually really fancy sharing @angua's carby breakfast anymore - but I certainly can share that utter frustration!

It's sad when we have to make a joke of it when really all we want is for our diabetes be taken just a little bit seriously.

I can relate to this as well.

The problem seems to be that they just don't consider diet (LCHF) as a form of treatment. So if you control your diabetes too well then as far as they're concerned you no longer have it, regardless of whether or not the underlying metabolic problems are still present. And of course the ultimate irony is that at the very same time they will happily tell you to eat less fat and more carbs. o_O

BTW angua. As your profile is blank, I'm just wondering if you have been diagnosed T2 in the past, and if you've previously had high HBA1C's.

When I came down to 38 at my last test/review, the DN asked if I wanted to come off the diabetes register. I said no thanks as I am still diabetic and I would miss out on the (currently) 6-month HbA1c checks and annual lipid profile. She was fine with that.
