Hi
It looks like i,m about to a get a pump just got the OK and i,am just waiting for the funding to come through. i dont know if they will fund CGM so i,am thinking of self funding,as far as i can gather the main cost is the sensors and the time they last before changing But i have herd of people making them last a lot longer than the recomended time limits and other people only using senors when they on holiday or away from home.
like to know any opinions........... Many thanks
If self funding you will have 2 questions realy.. Wil the pump you get have cgm capability or will you be having to have a stand aline cgm such as the freestyle navigator.
I have a navigator and would never consider using it if I was self funding. Purely from the quantity of sensors that dont even last 5 days. I know from another person using the same brand that he can also use up 3 sensors in a week... He isnt self funding either. I phone them up and get my failed sensors replaced... As I cant bear to think of my hospital wasting their money. The other person doesnt get sensors replaced by navigator, he just keeps putting them in till he gets sorted. Abbott have been good at replacing them... But it is hassle each time getting through to them, and I do get fed up of consistently having to phone them. It is possible to fool the navigator to restart.. But it is not easy to unclip the transmitter to fool it...
I self fund and use a Dexcom G4, my Combo pump does not take CGM's so need to carry both around. The Dexcom receiver is small and light so that's not a problem for me.
I always get 14 days from my sensors, if I take care and can get them to stay on longer I can get 21 days or more.
I started expecting no more than 7 days and thought I'd only wear 50% of time but now wear them all the time.

I'm thinking of self funding too. Have managed to get a week on cgm from clinic to try and sort some issues I have around my work shift pattern but don't know what make it will be. From what I can gather the dexcom seems to be the best option but I don't want to make the wrong decision and waste my money.
