Champagne and cocktails

Hello all,

Now I have your attention....

Have been low carbing and successfully reducing blood sugar readings for last seven weeks and my diet has been quite strict and I haven't had a drink and it isn't something I am normally bothered about...

But I have a significant birthday celebration coming up (39 again!!) where there will be lots of cocktails and fizz to be had. My question is for those of you lovely people that have been at this for longer and maybe have a drink from time to time.. What's the worst that can happen to my bs levels if I have a drink or 4?!!

I have been reading a bit about alcohol effects on here so I get the impression that alcohol in general doesn't normally raise blood sugar much, but it would be difficult to have diet mixers with cocktails for example, and I may fancy partaking in a few snacks after a drink and they will likely be of the nasty carb type...

Do I just go out and enjoy my once in a decade celebration?!! (YES!) I'm just worried about potential lingering after effects... I know everyones different and reacts differently but all advice welcome..

Many thanks

yay Party !! I'll just go and iron my tux :D

Dry White wine and Red wine are fine and will actually lower your levels. But one evening of bad diet isn't going to ruin your HBA1C. Spirits will have the same (or greater) affect. Remember that you're likely to be more sensitive to carbs now you've been restricting your diet though - so don't make yourself sleepy by too much carb.

If you do feel yourself going a bit high, just dance more vigorously.

Happy birthday (when it comes)

I agree that one night won't hurt, plenty of dancing.

Couple of points of advice

- The alcohol may well affect you more quickly/dramatically than you're used to -(not drank for a while, not as much food)
- Get back on the low carb wagon the very next day. A good-old fashioned full english (minus bread/hashbrowns/beans etc) to make you feel better the next morning a good place to start
- Enjoy yourself

If you're expecting to have 'lots' it might be worth dropping your evening metformin (if that's when you take it) just for one night. Someone told me that when I was first diagnosed; thinking about it now, I dont really see why. I'm on 3 met a day, and I don't have any problems drinking a whole bottle of red in an evening. Slips down quite easily, in fact . . .

A day off to celebrate won't hurt. But you may get drunker quicker, and some people on Met (not me!) get worse hangovers.

Have a good time!
