Hi Patsy.

I'm not and never have been on insulin, but I believe many folks find the basal, plus bolus way of managing allows them to better match their insulin use to their way of eating. I'm sure others will comment on that.

Many folks really do rate a publication called Carbs and Cals, which is available as an App (if you like the electronic format), but also as an actual book. I believe if you buy the actual book, you can download the app for free. If I'm honest, I don't know how much the book is, but I think the app costs £3.99. I understand lots like this book/app as it shows various sized portions to help with accuracy.

There are other such publications, including a Collins Gem Carb counter.

I d hope it all goes well for you Patsy, and I'm sure others with more relevant experience than me will post for you.

Hi @Patsy B :)

Carb counting isn't as hard as it sounds. You should receive lots of help if you're switched to a basal/bolus regime like you've mentioned above.

Remember too that packaged foods have the carb information on the packet :) One thing you might find useful is some good quality digital scales so you can weigh things like pasta and cereals, etc, accurately.

It's not as hard as it sounds and once you find out how many carb are in a favorite meal you can use it over next time. I mean if you are having scrambled eggs with a little cheese and you have looked them up, then you will know next time that they have very few carbs and probably will not raise your blood sugar much at all. Leafy greens do not have many carbs either. Broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage have very few carbs. Meats generally do not have many carbs but sauces and gravies often do. Packaged bread will have a carbohydrate count per slice on the package. Breads and baked goods can add a lot of carbs quickly so be sure to look these up. You can also google each food to find it's carb count if you need to before you get your own carb counter book. Do you have a favorite meal? I can help you look it up if you tell me what it is and how much of you eat at one time. You can do this!
I just read that you have IBS-probably do not want to alter your diet too much too quickly-just reduce quantity of high carbohydrate foods.

Have been making a list of food items and getting the carb count from the net so that i have a ready reconer at hand ...thankyou for your replies I usualy have a cookded dinenr every day at tea time that i think will be the highest carbs...but I shall have to weigh thinsg to find out exactly what I am eating :)
