I was taking 4 x 500mg daily of metformin slow release but have been changed to 2 x 5mg of glipizide daily due to tummy trouble. Ive been told to test randomly but im unsure if im at risk of hypo or hyper.

Glipizide acts by partially blocking potassium channels among beta cells of pancreatic islets of Langerhans. By blocking potassium channels, the cell depolarizes which results in the opening of voltage-gated calcium channels. The resulting calcium influx encourages insulin release from beta cells.

In other words, you're producing more insulin, rather than metformin making better use of the insulin. So, although not a forgone conclusion by any means, there is the chance of a hypo and you should be testing more than you might have been with metformin. Look at all the threads about driving as well. You should in theory be testing before driving and then every two hours while driving, in theory. I'm saying "in theory" because the advice given by the DVLA seems to be interpreted in different ways.

Thankyou its all so confusing. Im still a learner driver but currently not taking lessons but will keep the advice in mind. Thanks again.

Hi lucylockets
I was changed from metformin to Gliclazide because of the same problems as yourself. I have now been taking Gliclazide for about 4 years. When I have really busy periods and forget to stop for a break my BG does drop and I have hypo's. I have to test regularly especially before and after exercise and any shopping trips! It takes a bit of getting used to.!!
