My son (12 - diagnosed 6 months ago so probably still honeymooning) always does a BG test before going to sleep. We generally eat quite late, so sometimes there is only 45 minutes of so between eating and the last test.

Before dinner he has his Lantus (9 units) and if his BG is lower that about 5 before dinner he doesn't have any Novorapid before dinner.

Bedtime readings are very variable - anything between about 7 and 13, but by the morning they are almost always around about 5.5 - 6. So some nights his BG is dropping by 7, sometimes hardly at all. Why is this? Are we just being lucky that he is not dropping by 7 on a day when his bedtime test is 7? He has not had a night-time hypo yet.

Not really worried about, more curious.

hi there, i was not sure if i should reply because i am not an expert on lantus(my son is on a pump and my daughter uses levemir) however, i thought that lantus worked in a similar way to a basal rate on a pump-as in studies have shown it gives alower morning bg and less night time hypos. i wonder if it steadily brings down bg. we use levemir at bedtime and we are on multiple injections, and of coursethe pump.anyway it might be a good question at your next clinic!it sounds like the bgs are steady.how is your son coping with it all? :)
