Charcot Foot

51 years Type 1 Diabetic, good control HbA1C of around 6, been told to try and raise it a little in fact. It appears despite great long term control I have possible Charcot Foot, something that has come as a complete shock to me! I am awaiting an MRI scan to determine this as a correct diagnosis and listening and reading to what this involves is a bit of life changing thing for me, especially as my husband has recently had a stroke and is currently unable to drive! Any advice, knowledge would be appreciated.
 
Probably easier to Google it, in fact sensible for all diabetics to be aware of this condition as neuropathy is suffered by many of us. The important thing is to be aware and to make sure that you are seen regularly by a podiatrist

I've just been diagnosed with Charcot foot to, I have it slightly higher in the foot than where you normally get it,I'm currently wearing a vaco cast, been in it on and off for 5 months. Its driving me mad, I haven't come across any one that has it to share experience with

Yeah, it's caused my ankle to collapse to the right, I don't have it under the arch, trying to find people that have gone or going through it to chat , as no one else understands , I'm only 36

I was put in a 'boot' to begin with but unfortunately it rubbed too much and took skin off my ankle making it impossible to wear -have been told after my MRI if suspected diagnosis is correct , I will be put in a plaster cast for anything between 9 and 18 months- this will need to be changed weekly and it seems I may choose the colour I wish to wear!! Might mean a whole new wardrobe :-).

Really sorry for this for you Hannah, I have always been aware that poor control could cause problems which is why I have always been a train to keep mine sugars in good order

ooh that looks scary but treatable, possibly a cast for a while ? no advice as I has to google but sending best wishes x

it seems the bones in the foot at the focus point breaks and becomes permanently fragile, not really that easy to heal..

I would anyway try taking vitamin k2 which is said to prevent loss of calcium in the bones and also direct it away from blood wessels ...I dont know if that is true, but if it is it could maybe protect what is left so it does not get much worse...is supposed to be taken with vitamin d... I take them myself...but just to be in forhand of what complication I might possibly get from diabetes later on...

Yeah it's pants, my hba1c normally comes back between 7.6 & 8.6
I done a lot of sport befire like running & bike riding, it's put a stop to that, and I do hairdressing for a living, so constantly standing.
I suppose you don't know what's around the corner. I've had one consultant saying about realigning and pinning my ankle, and another one saying about leaving it, as it's still going through the really hot faze (and at any point within two years it may need realignment) so have to put everything on hold.
Interesting about the k2 not heard of that? I'll ask next week when I'm back.
Oh no a cast makes everything so much harder!
But if that's best you have to go with it x

A cast for 9 - 18 months it seems and apparently it will burn itself out but foot needs to be kept straight or more problems evolve. Will be fun as one day a week I take care of my 8 month old twin granddaughters and their 2yr 8 months big sister. Twins have learnt to crawl since last week so no doubt will be a lot faster than me............breathe!! :-)

Will get some K2 and VitD today, thanks for the help there, worth a try at least
 
I'm sorry. I know that Charcot Foot is a long, slow recovery, and needs a great deal of rest and non weight bearing. Both of those sound well nigh impossible with your current schedules! Hope you both get the treatment that will have you both mobile again asap!

Lol!sounds like that could be fun! At least my two are older than that!!! Good luck with your MRI scan!
I had to have CT scan after and a bone scan. So your probably find there's more tests to come !

Haha! Rest is hard,with busy life's.
But very important to.
Just not many people know about Charcot foot, so. nice to share experiences
 
I have been told I probably have Charcot Foot after an X-ray at the Vascular clinic. I am being monitored at the moment and trying to rest it which isn't easy! I also have Osteomyelitis in my foot. It is always my left foot too. All ulcers and now these added problems are on my left foot. I have lost the 2nd toe on my left foot already too.
I have a large lump under my arch and my ankle has collapsed inwards. The hospital mentioned a boot but I am disabled with varying problems in my back, neck, shoulders & leg after a car crash. I have Arthritis and the boot would put a strain on my back. I already walk with crutches and they have said I may need a scooter as I can't self propel a wheelchair due to my shoulders.
I have severe Neuropathy in both feet too.
I have been Type 1 since I was 3 which is 46 years now. We didn't have the advanced care available now when I was diagnosed. No blood meters or disposable pens etc. So control was a bit hit and miss. I spent a lot of my teens in hospital with Brittle Diabetes which was very hard to control.

Hi I've just been diagnosed and just turned 37. Waiting for an mri to confirm it currently try have a walking boot from the hospital said I could have it on for up to 2 years??!!! What's been your experience with treatment?
