Hi. I have been type one for 33 yrs and have a history of foot ulcers although none in the past year or so. I attend the local Podiatrist clinic every six weeks for checks. On a visit to a diabetes centre in a large city hospital two years ago for ulcer treatment there was mention of Charcot foot and I was given an information leaflet. My left foot was X rayed. No action taken. Two years down the line the arch of my foot has collapsed the foot is swollen and bruised and deformed to the left. It can be slightly difficult to remain balanced. I saw my diabetic consultant a couple of months back and mentioned Charcot foot. His reply was it would show on the X ray. My question is should I be pushing this a bit more? Thanks in advance Mick W

Yes, you should push this. I had the same symptoms abut 6 weeks ago and after 2 Xrays and an MRI scan was told I had a charcot foot... Make a fuss! Good luck!

Whether it is Charcot or not, if your foot is distorted and causing problems with balance it surely needs to be followed up.
I've no expertise or experience of this but I looked for a recent article on Charcot. This one certainly seems to suggest that plain x rays may not always be specific enough in the earlier stages. It suggests that "MRI, on the other hand, is the most sensitive modality in the detection of early changes of CN"

Pragmatically don't go quoting papers but do ask your GP to refer you for an opinion on what's going on with your foot and the best way to treat it.

Thank you for the replies. I find it's always the approach and how you say things to doctors that needs to be correct to get progress. I particularly like the approach to just get an opinion as last mentioned. Thanks again. Will try

Have you been told to wear the correct type of footwear for your Charcot condition, it's really important your Charcot is accommodated properly within footwear so as to provide relief
