Hello my name is Dustin and I have type 1 diabetes.... I was diagnosed late due to no one else in my family having the disease ... we were never introduced to the symptoms...

Anyhow, I have two children an 11 yr old daughter and a 4 yr old son, we have randomly checked my daughters sugar since I have known about being sick... her numbers are always right at 100

But last night after dinner I decided to check my sons sugar and it was 140.... so my question is.. should I b freaking out, what are the normals for a boy his age, thank u for ur time

140 sounds pretty normal after a meal. For a random (non-fasting) test to indicate diabetes, it should be over 200. Checking fasting levels is probably more useful, or you can ask his doctor to look into it.

Over 200? Damage starts to occur over 140!

I would randomly check again. Fasting as well as one and two hours after meals. If your daughters is always 100 then 140 does seem a tad high. Wha thad he eaten??? Are there other symptoms like thirst and urinating a lot?

200 is the threshold for diagnosis based random glucose levels. It was measured when it's likely to be highest, after dinner. That's why it's a lot more meaningful to get a fasting measurement :-P

American Diabetes Association:
This test is a blood check at any time of the day when you have severe diabetes symptoms.
  • Diabetes is diagnosed at blood glucose of greater than or equal to 200 mg/dl

Mayo:
Random blood sugar test. A blood sample will be taken at a random time. Blood sugar values are expressed in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or millimoles per liter (mmol/L). Regardless of when you last ate, a random blood sugar level of 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) or higher suggests diabetes, especially when coupled with any of the signs and symptoms of diabetes, such as frequent urination and extreme thirst

Many of us believe the recommended thresholds are set way too high. Have a look at Jenny Ruhls website. www.bloodsugar101.com

If damage starts occurring at 140 whynwould we want to go higher ???

If you see the AGP of a non-T1, it's more or less a straight line, but by definition an AGP excludes the top and bottom 10th percentiles. If, though, you see the underlying daily CGM traces, it's obvious that they too get a fair share of outliers out of range. Stephen Ponder covers this a bit in Sugar Surfing. In other words, it's perfectly normal, and just goes to show that even working beta cells get it wrong from time to time.

Wanting to keep it lower doesn't mean it's the threshold for diabetes. What's the harm in testing fasting instead, or getting a glucose tolerance test if still worried about it?

Please can we stay on topic and focussed on helping the OP. This is not the place for discussion of personal targets.

140 is 7.8mmol @Dustin_JohnsonTexan That looks like a normal blood sugar to me (as a person with diabetes - not a medical professional) especially as it came after a meal. If you're still concerned, try doing a few more tests eg fasting, and before a meal and two hours after the start of that same meal.

If you continue to have concerns, do see a doctor and get an official medical opinion.

Let us know how things go :)
