I take 18u Lantus before breakfast along with my first dose of NovoRapid. This dose was suggested to me at clinic, but now I've learnt stuff from the forum, I want to be able to decide what my Basal Lantus dose should be.
The DSN's suggestion may be correct, but it was a stab in the dark through no fault of her own, just because my records weren't good enough.
Can someone tell me how to carry out a 'fasted basal test' or direct me to a website that explains what I have to do?

ideally you should pick a time period, say from lunch to dinner, don't have any lunch and of course, no novorapid insulin...........test your BG, try not to correct unless your dangerously high, record.

you can test as many times as you want between lunch and dinner but on Lantus you would be fine with just a test at lunch and one before dinner.........this tells you if your Lantus dose has held you steady, ie between 1-2mmol. If so your dose it good between lunch and dinner. if its not, you will need to consider testing the rest of the day , overnight, dinner till bed etc, as your on a single dose, changing the dose for just 5 hours of 24 may have effects on the rest of the day.....

this is the basics and the start..........I would prefer to start basal testing overnight, your dose may be out by then though......

Good advice from Novorapidboi. Just remember not to eat anything between the fasting periods even if it is low-carb as this will interfere with the bg results, if possible just drink also, if at any point you start to go low just treat the hypo and abandon the test until the next day.

Once you get the basal dose right your 50% there, so good luck :)

Thank you for your help. I feel confident enough now to start fine tuning my doses.:)
