My hubby, has this condition he has been told that there is not a lot to do but manage the joint pain, as he is Diabetic high dose steroids are not an option. He is developing nodules on nearly every joint some are quite large, particularly those on his elbows and knees. Does anyone have any experience of this rare complication ? Any help or advice welcome.

Re: cheiro arthopathy

Hi jarop and welcome to the forum.

I found this article about cheiroarthropathy and it does say that steroid injections do help. They only raise the blood sugars for a short time, i.e. a few days in my experience and the relief they provide is usually for a few months. It does mean extra blood sugar testing during this time. This article also suggests physiotherapy and ultrasound.

Your profile does not state which type of diabetes your husband has or how he is managing his blood sugars. Most of these type of complaints can be affected by high blood sugars although this is not always the case. Is there any help we can give with management or diet then please ask away.

Re: cheiro arthopathy

Thanks for your reply, he's type 2 on Lantis and Novorapid. He has had the steroid injections in his hands as he has the classic 'open hand prayer' and they did give some relief. He has Nodules on every joint and his feet. He has Neuropathy in his feet so the Docs won't consider injecting in them.

Re: cheiro arthopathy

Mine took a long time to diagnose after the progressive elimination of many other conditions.

It is entirely limited to my hands. There is thickening of the tissue in the palms with some pea-type nodules.

With blood sugar control and physio, I am at last seem some improvement.

The senior physio at Solihull Hospital tells me that she hasn't had a diabetic cheiroarthopathy referal before.

This appears to be a tissue rather than joint condition.

Hows your hubbys diet? Is he following the classic 'starchy carbs with every meal' advise? It may help him if he starts to low carb.

Re: cheiro arthopathy

hi i have just recently been diagnosed with this cheiroarthropathy, and just been diagnosed also with osteoathritis, and they think i have oesteoporosis as well, on the xrays the knuckles in some of my fingers have disappeared, and caused the fingers to stick out constantly, the consultant said the bones in my fingers appear to be exceptionally thin, i have had a dexa scan and am awaiting my next appointment. for years i have been treated for spondylitis they are wondering now whether i was misdiagnosed and there for given the wrong treatment. my diabetic medication is 3lots of injection , a day consisting of 1insulin and 2 byetta, and 5 metformin aday. when given the diagnosis i was dumb struck because i'd never heard of it, it was more surprising to me because i was nursing for 30yrs.

I have just been diagnosed withc diabetic cheiroarthropathy after a kidney & pancreas transplant nearly a year ago! I would like to know which painkillers people find effective, I have been taking pregabalin which takes 'the edge' off but are giving me bad side effects.
