Diabetes, being lonely, being so far from my family...they live in Scotland i now live in England (3yr) spiders, smokers,
Type 2 diabetic and today was put on 8 5mg steroids for 5 days plus 500mg amoxicillan, checked my sugar level half an hour ago and it was 23.4  bloody hell i couldny believe it so i phoned nhs24 and they say it is the combination of the infection and the steroids.
so tomorrow 9am i have to go to hospital to get my lungs checked and if the steroids are working then i can have them reduced to try get my sugars down again.

I had no idea something like this could happen ha ha ha how nieve...i mean i always believed it was down to what we diabetics eat!

take care of you....xxx

Unfortunately
the liver will produce glucose[unless you are starving] andinfection and some medications will trigger the process.
Let's hope the hospital sorts you out.

Hi fairysue. :)

Hope you are getting sorted out and feel a bit better. It is a bit of a roller coaster this diabetes pathway!

Thank you for your replies and support, i have a couple of days now on the antibiotics and steroids and the sunday i felt better then today i feel worse, sugars were staying around 15-17 i feel low very wheezy coughing, checked my sugar and its 22.2. I had lunch at 12 then slept for an hour took my meds 3pm so its definately them causing the scary rise.I've foned the doc for advice so waiting for a call as im not happy being this bad. I suffer anxiety aswell so needless to say thats up and doesn't help. what a terrible place to be right now but at least i know that it's not me deliberately ignoring my health....

take care of you...xxx

Hi Sue, I would speak with your doctor or preferably a trained diabetic nurse as you may need extra diabetic medication whilst on steroids.

I was a long term steroid user, 3 years in fact which caused my diabetes, I was finnally weaned off them very slowly over 6 months last year and it took around 3 or 4 months for my bg levels to drop to there current levels.

I was placed straight on insulin on diagnosis whilst still on prednisolone but after I stopped taking it I was able to reduce and finally stop the insulin treatment. I'm not suggesting that you need insulin but it could well be that you need to have some extra medication/help whilst taking steroids.

Hope the steroids do their work for you, they did me :D

Hiya, thanks for that advice i did call my doctor and say i was very worried about my readings and i was not eating so much just to keep sugars as low as i could....no it did't work. He told me to take another 500mg metformin at night and now thats 2 days and it's working.... :) although i finished the steroids yesterday. Today my sugars have dropped down to 5.4 and was 6.0 when i woke this morning! ha ha ha it feels better thank god.
I did notice also my eyesight was a bit more blurry in the last week so now i know why. I'm still a bit chesty and finish anti biotics tomorrow so next week should be a hell of a lot better.

I hope things staighten out better for you too in time, i thank you for your reply.

take care of you...xxx
