Type 2 Chewing Gum

I like to chew gum as part of a dental hygiene programme but as a type 2 diabetes sufferer I want to avoid products which include sugars. Looks easy but although Wrigley gum for example does not include sugars it does include polyols. These are synthetic chemicals and it is difficult to find out if they are harmful for diabetes sufferers. I do not have a sweet tooth and I dislike the pseudo sugar coatings of normal commercial chewing gum gums.

Any thoughts out there? If you have suggestions for products let me know and tell me where to get them - preferably not Amazon. Geologist1942

Hi @Geologist1942 , welcome to the forum.

Polyols shouldn't affect your numbers, as a T1 I've been told to not include them in my carb count to decide on my insulin dose.

Also, a piece of gum is very small, so there are even minimal carbs in a regular piece of gum.

Hi @Geologist1942 It all depends how much you chew and how much you restrict your carbs. Most chewing gum ( even sugar free) has 1 or 2 carbs per piece. An odd piece does no harm but if (like me before I realised) you can get through two or three packs a day it can mount up.
 
I used to have the sugar free chewing gum but found the sweeteners were spiking me and giving a weird feeling like I couldn't swallow. I give anything with sweeteners in a miss now because of that.
 
I eat the odd piece of Chewing gum. Used to eat more some years ago. Now just when I need my tummy settled at the moment.
