Hello I am new on here but I have a question which I hope some one could help me with.

I have a daughter who is nine, Sje can eat her dinner but she will crave sugar for eg she can eat a whole bag of apples or any other fruit which I do not mind her eating fruit but it is concerning me to think that she is eating a lot of sugar and sweet drinks like fizzy and squash she also looking for crisps etc.

I spoke to my friend and she said about taking her to the doctors to get checked out, My partner, mum and my dad has diabetes so should I be worried about her or am I being a parnoid parent.

Hi,

As far as I know, craving sugar isn't a classic symptom of diabetes. Children who develop diabetes are often unusually thirsty, needing to wee a lot. Losing weight and feeling really tired are also symptoms. My daughter only had the last 2 symptoms.
I'm not sure why your daughter is craving sugar? Sorry, can't really help with that but thought I'd let you know what the usual symptoms of diabetes are.

Sugar cravings in children are not uncommon but you are doing the right thing by having her checked out as they can lead to medical problems if left unchecked, especially teeth and gums. As you might imagine, many parents adopt an attitude of letting the child grow out of it, or claiming it is typical behaviour for a child. Much better to raise the concern with a GP. There are many different reasons why kids have these cravings.
