Hi, my 10year old is on a pump, he often forgets to take his insulin for lunch at school, I don't know how to make him remember. He is adamant he did it, but pump say otherwise so I think he presses the buttons on pump, but don't see it through as it "pres, pres, pres, and pres, put it away and forget about it" not checking it did give... What can I do to make him understand how important it is and to check? He is in high school next year so I need him to do this himself... Any ideas?

Children I know with pumps are supervised at times of giving insulin.
The nurses have been into the schools and trained staff, so they are not left to their own devices....
Even in high school...

There is a Parent's Passport for Schools which you can obtain from IDDT.

The InDependent Diabetes Trust [IDDT] is all too well aware of the difficulties that children with diabetes and their parents face in everyday life when managing the condition. One area that proves particularly problematic is managing the condition at school. With this in mind, IDDT has produced a new, FREE booklet, the Parents Passport for Schools.

The passport has been designed to enable parents to inform schools about how to manage their child’s diabetes and in turn support schools to comply with SEN regulations. It also provides teachers with vital information about the condition. IDDT has produced similar documents for use in hospitals and also in care settings , such as residential care. As with all our leaflets, the passport is FREE.

The passport contains a wide range of information on how a child’s diabetes is managed, including:

  • Dealing with high and low blood sugar levels.
  • Food and mealtimes.
  • Insulin administration and blood testing.

IDDT hopes that the passport will prove to be a valuable tool for families with a child with diabetes, teachers with a child with diabetes in their charge, school nurses and SEND co-ordinators.

Does the pump have a reminder alarm so if not bloused between x hours it alarms? At 10 years of age your son should not be expected to manage his diabetes to the extent that he administers insulin unsupervised as could be very dangerous if overdosed.
