Customer helplines that use recorded menus that promise to put me through to the right person but never do - and being ill. Oh, and did I mention customer helplines :)
Hi Lynn, I find Indian food is fine although I stay away from the breads and confine myself to just a spoonful or so of rice but with so many beautiful vegetable dishes its not hard to order too much food still even without pigging out on bread and popadoms. Plus we eat home cooked curry at least twice a week and I only eat basmati rice and can manage a couple of spoonfuls generally, but of course you will need to test these foods for yourself, you may find that you can manage more or less of the carby foods than I can.
Chinese food is a little trickier as it is always based around starchy carbs with lots of long grain rice dishes (not basmati) and noodle dishes, I have found the noodle dishes are better for me but only in small portions and I find the thin vermicelli type noodles best. Also try to avoid sweet and sour dishes as they will contain large amounts of sugar to get the sweet part of the dish to balance the sour parts.
As always though the best advice is to test all these foods especially so with restaurant and take away dishes as they can be a bit hit and miss and can even vary place by place. I have always found something in every restaurant that I could happily eat though so just go, choose your dishes carefully and enjoy yourself
Lynn1 - Why not try thinking it through a bit first from what you know of other foods? You've already tested rice, bread and batter I think? Now that's not to say that tempura batter or that used for sweet and sour balls will necessarily return exactly the same scores ash chip shop, or home made batter, but it gives a clue.
You know you have to think it through, then eat and test.
The other thing to remember is that different restaurants will vary recipes for the same dishes, and may even be inconsistent in their preparation methods - a pinch or two of this, and dollop of that.
Myfitnesspal will give you an idea of carb counts, and if you are going to make your own, you can use the recipe section to work out the carb content of your own. But, you know the answer is taste and test.
