Chinese Takeaway

My kids want to treat mum to her favourite Takeaway on mothers day (Despite my offer to help them cook her a nice leg of lamb  )

Any suggestions for what from at typical Chinese takeaway menu might be a bit more suitable for me other than my usual chicken chow mein and egg fried rice ????

Mat the honest answer is no as far as I would say.

If her favourite was Indian then its a completely different matter as a lot of Indian food is completely fine.

I tried making a low carb safe Chinese but only once. It was a complete disaster. The problem is many of the dishes are cooked in sweet sauces and apart from plain beansprouts things get pretty high carb very quickly. Even water chestnuts are 30g / 100g and 30g is about six bits at most. Chow mein has noodles which some people find they are quite tolerant to but not many. Curry sauce instead of sweet and sour is still a killer. Eat the chicken or the prawns out of S&S balls and leave the batter - what's the point you want to enjoy what you eat.

So if you go you're going to take a hit. If you can walk rather than drive try drinking some gin or vodka before going as that may help you not spike!

Chop suey? Egg foo yung?
I'm sure, if you ask them, they will be happy to make you a low carb meal. My local does me a delicious char siu pork and duck dish on bok choi. Absolutely yummy! :D

Actually just read Chicken green peeper and black bean sauce may not be too bad. Black bean sauce looks to be around 30g + some for the other veggies. Keep to a smidgeon of fried rice and you might get away with it. May try it myself. If you do please let us know how big the spike was :)

And
chicken/meat/ prawns with ginger and spring onions
chicken/meat.prawns with peppers in black bean sauce
chicken/meat/prawns with aubergine
chicken/meat/prawns with mixed vegetables

Have a soup for starters

Stay away from harmless looking satay, I thought I was safe with peanut sauce, didnt think did I DOH, its got sugar in of course, took me from pre=dinner of 4.7 straight up to 10.4 2hrs postprandial NEVER EVER AGAIN

I have my chinese take aways with either cauli rice (I know you either love or hate it) or a slice of my low carb bread with butter.

I'm a bit surprised that you spiked on peanut sauce - it has a bit of sugar but loads and loads of fat to balance. I would expect it to be pretty low GL especially with the chicken. Chinese soups can be tricky however. They are oftened thickened with corn starch and/or contain noodles.

Fat won't balance out sugar. Fat + Sugar is the worst possible combination for diabetes.

if it's a once in a blue moon event, I'd say take a hit and make up for it the next day. It's not as if you are going to have one every day. Have smaller portions to limit your carbs a bit.

I have Chicken & Mushroom soup for starters.
Then Chicken Foo Yung and Chicken & Mushroom.
If they don't add MSG then they don't usually spike me and fill you up nicely.

Well I had Chicken with beanshoots in soy sauce, along with a much smaller amount of mushroom fried rice and chow mein than I'd previously have had

Seem to have just about got away with it too, BG before dinner 6.3, 1 hour after 8.2, 2 hours after 7.2. So I reckon I can get away with this as a very occasional treat!

Hmmm Not so sure I did "get away" with it now, had my highest fasting BG level this morning since I started monitoring!

this morning I was 7.7, usually I am 6.0 to 6.5 on waking. Can I put this down to the takeaway ???? does it work like that??
