We have a house guest from USA, each time he comes we hav 1 night with chinese takway. Now I am low carbing need to find out what I can have from here.

I was thinking, crispy duck, but using lettuce to wrap, no sauce, dry ribs, omelette foo young thing, Mongolian lamb, which they do is just lamb with crisp skin and a watery dipping sauce which is chilli based. Also some as you can have water based soups like chicken an mushroom or th spicy one, cannot remember name.

What do you have from Chinese?

Chinese is the difficult one. The last time it got discussed people mentioned similar things to what you suggest. The other one was Chicken Green Pepper and Black Bean Sauce. I tried building a low carb Chinese about a month after diagnosis. It was a total disaster and gave me a reading in the mid teens. My advice is either tread with caution, just go sod it for the evening and expect the worse or not be the designated driver so you can imbibe some alcohol to act as "incoming" counter measures if needed.

I love Chinese and the creamy Indian curries, but don't have them any more. I think that if I really craved one, I would say 'sod it' and have what I wanted, but it would be a very, very rare treat indeed. I would also follow Steve's advice and top myself to overflowing with a bottle of red or similar, to try to keep things as low as I could. I would also probably do quite a bit of exercise before and after.

Reading this lot back, I'm not sure it's worth it (for me).

I have whatever I like at my fav Chinese  my concession to low carbing is that I don't have rice or noodles.

But after the frst time, I NEVER test afterwards, however much red wine I have drunk

I don't do it very often :?

Would totally agree with all above-Chinese was a disaster levels wise for me so I too,if I was going to have it again as a one off, would just have whatever I fancy and start again tommorow.Jo,I agree regarding the Indian too,I used to eat a lot of creamy,Kashmir influenced curries that were quite sweet and based around coconut but avoid them now,i tend to go for a Bhuna or Rogan now and have substituted Naan bread for sheek kebabs and a small tandoori chicken or fish starter and maybe 1 poppadum with a couple of tablespoons of mushroom fried basmati rice, once a month i can get away with that with a few glasses! :D

Hi Paul,

If I were to have an Indian, I would forgo my beloved Peshwari naan :( but would still have the curry I like, and a miniscule amount of rice. But I would hide my BG meter for at least two days. Sadly, not likely to happen, as my terror of complications probably wouldn't allow me to eat it in the first place.

Jo.

I have a few pints of kingfisher, few large glasses of red, small amount of Pilau rice with my Jalfrezi, mushroom bajii and a small chapati. (the unleavened bread, thinner and smaller, seems much kinder than a nan)
Never have chinese or Thai nowadays. If I had chinese, I'd probably have half a crispy duck to myself, with a few of the skinny pancakes (can't be much surely?) and some spicy veggy thing

Ok, so from going on what you have said, any meat that's dry, veggies, foo yung. Need to see if the use MSG seems to be important.

Thanks

Just rang my Chinese, some stuff has MSG in (ready stuff) some stuff does not, they are happy not add MSG to stuff that does not have it in already.

There are some things I just don't need to know!

On a more seroius note, the question I now ask myself before a Chinese (or anything that is more carbs than I usually eat in a weeK) is do I like it enough to deal with the consequences. The consequences of that post carb spike results in an outbreak of my roseaca (taking 3-4 days to clear), a headache and indigestion.

Bamboo shoots are approx 4g of carbs per 100g weight, just watch for the sauce it comes with.

I usually have Chicken & Mushroom Soup for starters (or a veg type one).
Then a portion of Chicken with Mushrooms and a portion of Chicken Foo Yung. End up with a decent sized plate full to say the least and doesn't usually cause me too much trouble (as long as they don't use MSG, fortunately ours around here don't in those dishes it seems but I think some did when I was in America big time!! )

Enjoy,
Angie

The skinny wraps I find are ok.. however the ho-sin sauce certainly isn't!

I have to say I am partial to a Chinese.. although I take more insulin for a Chinese than I would do in 2 or 3 days of 'normal' eating..
