Chocolate and blood results

Hello,
It was really only a matter of time before I caved and scoffed a load of chocolate. Yesterday I ate a whole block (I think 100g!) of milk chocolate. No extra insulin and it did not seem to affect my readings until about 3 hours later, but they didn't go sky high, only to about 9.
Is this normal? How does chocolate affect your results?
 
The fat content of the chocolate would delay the bg spike but I'm very surprised it took 3 hours.

Any meal that has a high-fat content will delay the digestion of the carbs and will raise bg more slowly, resulting in higher bg readings many hours later, that is why many of us type 1's prefer to split-dose for these type of meals to cope with the delay.

I don't really eat chocolate now but the best time to have it is after a main meal, same as any other treat.

100g of milk chocolate is a lot in one go, if your a big chocolate fan try the 80-90% dark chocolates as they are lower in carbs, Aldi do one called Moser Roth and each pack has 5 individual bars, each one contains 4g of carbs.

Depends on how close it is to your next meal, if it were within an hour say you could leave it and just include a correction dose when you bolus for your meal.

O thank you. No I've not done it yet so that link will be really helpful :)
It's put me off chocolate a bit now anyway as I did not feel great after eating it. I'll deffo try smaller servings of dark choc
 
No wonder you didn't feel well, 100g is a lot in one go.............lol

Once you've been diagnosed for 6 months anyone can put their name down to go on a carb counting course such as DAFNE, that is provided they run the courses in your area, your DSN will tell you if they do.
 
I believe the next one here is in October, which I am booked onto. Just seems like a long way to go to muddle through by guessing. It's all a learning curve I suppose

Use the on-line carb counting course in the mean time to tide you over, by the time October comes you'll already know most of it.

The other factor is that there may be less "sugar" than you think in the chocolate. To find this out you'd need to closely read the label. Even then it probably won't actually tell you how much glucose is present.
