Hi! Is there any point taking novo rapid with chocolate? If I am not mistaken, chocolate gets released slowly into the blood stream and won't show on our bg until a few days...

Over a few hours... not days. A little bit wont hurt, i usually guess a little. My fave is dark chocolate which allows me more per sitting :)

I will eat chocolate with a meal, not on its own as a snack, meaning it can be released correctly with the meal. I will always count the carbs in the chocolate and give novorapid for the chocolate as well as the meal.

@muzza.kazi It depends how much you're eating. I don't bother bolusing for tiny amounts but for a whole bar I would. If you're worried about going low, you could experiment with bolusing after or a split bolus.

I eat all kinds of chocolate in moderate portions.

I bolus for chocolate. I don't need to pre-bolus as far in advance though. For meals etc. I tend to bolus 25-30 mins in advance but for milk or white chocolate I will bolus 10 mins prior to eating instead.

I tend to snack on 85% chocolate which is lower in carbs anyway and takes much longer to affect my blood sugar and I'll only bolus for this about 15 mins after eating and only if I'm consuming more than 5g of carbs which is about 15g of 85% chocolate.

I do this to Amy, a chocolate biscuit with my lunch or tea which keeps me a happy bunny but don't snack throughout the day.

Chocolate has a bit of fat in it which is why converting sugars to glucose is a bit slow however it can vary from person to person. Track your levels after eating to see when you get a BGL spike, and yes it's hours not days. I think all foods should have worked their way through the system within 8 hours.

You are mistaken, a few days for the impact of chocolate is either a typo or a misunderstanding. Chocolate isn't that slow acting, the slowest would be a couple of hours, but it's more likely a standard chocolate bar, say a mars bar, would be impacting on blood sugar within 20 minutes. So the point of taking bolus with chocolate is the same as any other food, to keep blood sugar in range and manage the rise. If testing after eating a particular chocolate is showing you you don't need to bolus to manage the rise then that's a great find for you.

With trial (and very much error), I can no longer tolerate milk chocolate without a spike, but three squares of dark chocolate (1.5CP's) I can enjoy with virtually no rise at all.

Hence I can enjoy a zero carb evening meal, then enjoy some chocolate and a creamy coffee for my pudd
