Hi all, another question. When you're taking metformin, gliclazide and sitagliptin can you eat chocolate and all things sweet every day and get normal blood glucose test results? I thought the blood test showed how well you you eat over a 2 or 3 month period.
 
If you eat chocolate and all things sweet your DN will not be very happy and your next hba1c result will be very high, you are diabetic and can't get away with all the sweet stuff any longer it will make you ill. Your annual blood test does show how you have done over the previous three months but you are supposed to aim to get it as low as possible. So start looking at bags of nuts for snacks instead of sweeties, there is a lot of help on the food threads for things you can snack on and when you get down to normal figures and come off medication you may get away with the odd one but looks like you have work to do. The meds will help you get lower but diet and excercise and your own self will have to do the hard work too, the tabs can't do it alone

Hi poohtiggy, that's what I think. But on my last blood test my hba1c came back as 37 mmol even though I have been eating chocolate and sweets and carbs every day for months before, so I don't think I'm diabetic anymore.

I don't understand that, have you had a recent blood test?
 
If you're on all that medication - please don't kid yourself that you're no longer diabetic, your medication's controlling it for you.

You'd definitely be kinder to yourself if ,as @poohtiggy has suggested, you eat a sensible diet. A small piece of high cocoa dark chocolate is fine, but scoffing carbs and sweets every day is likely to have repercussions at some point.

My last blood test was 10th August. It doesn't seem right that a lot of people are finding it difficult to manage with slight food changes, and I eat pretty much what I want. It must have been the anti psychotic that I was taking.

Hi robbity. But surely if it was my medication controlling it that we'll then wouldn't that be the same for everyone else?
 
No - everyone has their own individual form of diabetes as our bodies and health (or lack of it) are all different. There may be some issues that are common to some or all, but we need to find out how to manage our particular version. Some people have pre-diabetes or milder forms so can quickly see better glucose levels with medication and/or diet, and some need all the help they can get.

But it's rather foolish to assume when you are still taking all that medication that you no longer have diabetes, though it may be well controlled. Unless you've been off all your diabetic medication and can manage normal glucose levels longer term, then you don't have any actual evidence that you could be "diabetes free". Unfortunately! :(

Yes i can see what you're saying. So i suppose the next step would be to stop the medication and see what happens to my bloods.
