Cholesterol and statins

I am a MODY on insulin for 28 years with a last HbA1c of 44 and good control. Just had my yearly check up with my Consultant who wants to start me on Simvastatin because my cholesterol is 4.3 and LDL 2.2. The past 5 years my cholesterol has been 3.6-4.2 and I don't want to start on statins. I don't have high blood pressure or any other health problems. I'm thinking of asking my GP for a 2nd opinion. Anyone got any thoughts.

Just have a look at all the threads on statins and you might find that most of us are anti. I won't touch them because of the damage I've seen. Also it seems that as soon as you are pronounced diabetic they want to put you on them, I refused. But each to their own. Google it also you will find out an awful lot. Also The Great Cholesterol Con is a good book to read on the subject.

Well, if it's a Thursday, then statins are good for you

but if it's Friday, then they're not good news

Reminds me of the butter's good for you/bad for you swings we've seen for decades now.

From the second link, at least we've got a documentary to look forward to :D

I second dawnmc's book recommendation. I liked the book so much I got my own copy.
For me there are too many prophets of doom about statins and their effects, so personally I will never take one.
But everyone must make up their own mind. It always feels to me as if prescribing a statin ticks one of your GP's performance targets.
Whilst many may be anti, some report no problems with a statin (or no further problems after a change in statin.)

It really is up to you.

Hi. I have no problems with Simvastatin but had to ask my GP to halve the maximum dose he started me on (bad practice to go onto a high dose to start with). My wife had serious liver problems and had to stop within a few days. Others report the muscle pain problem which is actually destruction of muscle tissue I believe. So, at your cholesterol level I'm not sure what the advanatge would be to go onto them adnd certainly stop if you have any bad symptoms.

Certainly go for the second opinion Stepcar, my situation is similar to you, last year my TC was 4.1 and statins were suggested then last time my TC was 3.8 I was told statins weren't necessary :?
