Cholesterol on a Low Carb Diet

Stefansson ate more fat than protein. Diet was high fat-lots of offal-muscle meat was kept low.

Hi Claire it seems to me you are very opinionated regarding your nutritional advice from a diabetes nurse specialist , yet you were the overweight type2 who got into that condition in the first place. How long have you actually had diabetes and more to the point altered your eating habits for life not just on a whim. Having had type1 myself for 49 years (will receive a chocolate medallion next year) I have been treated in various manners however if it doesn't suit you work with the specialists not fight them. You will never know the complete complexity of diabetes. No one does or there would be a cure

I wonder if you inject insulin? Everybody needs carbs. The only substance the brain recognises is glucose. It needs it to function. Ketones are the end result of muscle breakdown to supply the starving body of energy., you breath stinks of them and not pleasant for others. Yes cut back carbs if you tend to overeat but no food group should be excluded long term. Fad diets are unsustainable long term.

Hmmm whether or not Claire is opinionated or not doesn't entitle you to imply that getting T2 diabetes was her own fault. Was it your fault you developed T1?

There are many reasons why people develop T2 and many reason why people gain weight regardless of their lifestyle choices as my own endocrinologist would tell you in regard to my own position.

Please don't play the blame game as it is very insulting and unpleasant to many of us.

"Everybody needs carbs." not true "The only substance the brain recognises is glucose" not true but the brain does require some glucose, which the body can make from dietary protein. "Ketones are the end result of muscle breakdown to supply the starving body of energy" not true unless you are starving to death. Ketones are part of normal healthy metabolism. It is only when blood glucose is high that high ketone numbers can lead to serious problems.

Not true. The brain requires around 120g of glucose a day to function. It can adequately get that from ketone breakdown. Many 1000's of people on this forum have for years followed a restricted carb regime at either ketogenic or semi-ketogenic levels without ill effects and without stinking breath.

You may be a T1 of 49 years but you have no experience in managing T2 diabetes by diet only or diet plus minimal medication. You are not an expert and perhaps rather than making snap and wild statements and judgements you should take some time to read the 1000's of peoples experiences over the years. I would not dream of advising you how to maintain your diet under insulin control (even though I have a T1 son of many years) so please give us T2's the same respect.

What you are calling a fad unsustainable diet is actually the diet recommended by the Swedish Health system for T2 diabetics and approximately that now recommended by the ADA in the States. Both recommend permanent long term carbohydrate reduction for T2. The ADA states a target of 130g / day and the Swedes have no problem with ketogenic diets (sub 130g) so long as the person has regular health checks.

I inject insulin and do a ketogenic diet(18 months now) and I have suffered no ill effects whatsoever on less than 30 grams a day and my HbA1c is just below 5% so I object to your ridiculous statement Re "Fad diets are unsustainable long term"...maybe you should google the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis before commenting on something you appear to not know anything about.
