Cholesterol on a Low Carb Diet

Looking at Claire's post she didn't need to word it better IMO-she simply voiced her opinion on her own thread-if you don't agree with her then that's cool but no-one is telling anyone what to do-you have the choice to simply ignore.
As you said yourself Paul this is a forum to voice our opinions whether we agree about something or not and that was all mine was an opinion just like you are giving yours. I have seen plenty of opinions on other threads when people have not agreed about something that was said

Having said that...I'm not on MDI or an Insulin pump so even though I MAY have an opinion-I quite rightly stay away from those forums out of respect whereas this is the low carb diet forum and low carbing is something of which you have no interest in following so it works both ways...If you don't approve of low carb diets then NO-ONE is forcing you to read this sub forum...food for thought

You dont need to low carb to have an interest in it and there is nothing to stop anyone commenting on any diet related thread as far as I am aware and you certainly do not run this forum Paul........food for thought?

I'm a type 1 pumper, but, there are occasions, reasons why I would like a nice tasty carb free snack and or meal. Nor does it mean any disrespect those that dont follow it. Just cause its not my lifestyle choice as my main diet does not mean I have no interest in it. In the back of my mind there may come a time where I have insulin resistance also. Who knows.

I would like to discuss your reply Sid but I won't be able to do so here.

Claire said, "The alternative: A low fat diet, starvation, depression, killing yourself at the gym, illness and medication for life. Nope, I no longer listen to my doctor TBH."

Is that your guru's opinion Claire or is it yours?

It isn't actually true as many people manage their diabetes in other ways to low carbing and are successful, even the ones on a low fat regime. Some people are successful using Slimming World and Weight watchers, both low fat plans.

I don't know anything about the history of the forum, but I am assuming that the 'low carb diet' section was created in order to stop arguments about low-carbing derailing all the other threads, and that the idea was that low-carb ideas could be discussed here without constant argument with the nay-sayers. I think it's important and proper that low-carb arguments be challenged on the forum, especially if they are being advanced in an unduly dogmatic way, but surely it's only fair that low-carbers should also have their own part of the forum where they can presuppose a level of agreement and shared experience. Otherwise, for those of us simply interested in reading what low-carbers have to say, the threads are always derailed before they get past first base. This is actually acutely boring and doesn't help anybody

I have never said I don't approved of low carb diets or that I have no interest in them I am very interested in it actually I do not very low carb now because at this moment in time I don't really need to but I have moderated my carb intake by cutting out starchy carbs and and a few other things but in the future I may find it necessary to go lower carb so yes I do read the low carb threads. I thought that was what the forum was about to learn all we can about diabetes managment but there will always be some disagreements. You said it yourself Paul that the forum is for voicing our opinions and you certainly don't hesitate to do just that when you don't agree with something thats said as you have done here

So why did you have a go at the OP if that's true? Hmmmm...As they say in Dragons Den..."I'm out!"

Because my original post if you had read it properly was nothing about approval or not of low carb diets and my post would have been the same even if I was a low carber...which I could well be in time... it was simply about the statement she made about illness depression and bad medication when not doing the low carb and exercise regime, I found that comment unnecessary and not very tactful as plenty of members on the forum do not do the low carb but I am sure they don't want to think because of that they face that sort of future... end of story I think

Just to get back on track, I low carbed from the first week, simply because the way of life suited me, at diagnoses my cholesterol figures were as follows: triglycerides 6.1, HDL 0.9, ratio 4.4, after 6 months the following, triglycerides 0.9, HDL 1.5, ratio 2.3.

What's your low carb diet?

Very high saturated fat?
Added butter to all meals, added cream, a lot of fatty meat, high fat yoghurt?

I don't low carb, but then I don't add fat to anything, more low fat at the moment to count the calories.
Probably go for unsaturated fat though when I do introduce it back.
All my cooking is from scratch, couldn't live without the herbs and the spices now though!

Tablets (oral)
Going LC and replacing the carbs with good natural saurated fats including virgin coconut, butter, cream etc and using full fat dairy like cheese yoghurts, has proved beneficial to my lipids.

Reducing carbs has lowered my trigs, sat fats increased HDL improved TC/HDL and trigs/HDL ratios while LDL remained similar to when I was on a low fat diet.

And I'm not alone many other low carbers have reported the same effects.

It's an interesting subject, as I'm targeting my cholesterol at the moment, and concentrating on getting good numbers.
I low fat though, so I'll report back at my next three month review.
Then it'll be a trial with unsaturated fat, after I stop calorie counting.

Me too. My lipid profile is far better now than it ever was on a low fat regime.
