Cholesterol up :(

You can only try and see what happens.

Carbs are known to decrease HDL so the fewer of those the better.

Foods that help with all lipids are the omega 3 ones - oily fish (especially salmon) and lots of it, olive oil, avocado, flax seed and chia seeds, nuts, one small glass of red wine a day (full of antioxidants), dark chocolate and so forth. R-Alpha Lipoid Acid supplements are also supposed to help. Exercise is very important.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

You're right, I can.

I'm always re- evaluating what I'm doing so I can tweak things. I am eating more fish than ever and trying to cut back on meat a bit. But I don't eat a lot of nuts so I can sort that....

Morning all,

so this morning, I went for my first run............ yikes it was hard after so long off. I managed 1.6 miles and walked when I really had to but made up for it with a few sprints. When I left my BG was 8, when I got back it was 13.9 - but I expected that as it always happens after exercise. It should come down again soon. I've had a delicious breakfast of bacon, sausage, egg & a couple of cherry tomatoes. I'm supposed to be going again tomorrow muscles permitting!

That's a great 1st run - the hard part is getting out that front door - keep going well done :D

Wonderful statistics.
You don't die from 'all causes' with high cholesterol.
From the link, it's a straight line, you're 3 times more likely to die of CHD with cholesterol over 6.98 than you are with cholesterol under 4.65.
I'll take my chances with 'communicable diseases' and 'malnutrition' which if I remember was one of the biggest killers with low cholesterol from the WHO 'all causes' graph.

But we all roll the dice, either those with high cholesterol will die first, or those with low, or we'll find it doesn't matter if you're hit by a bus.
What we choose to believe will at least leave data for the next generation.
I can remember my sister going to the GP for a throat infection. He advised her to give up smoking. My sister asked the question. "How come there are so many who smoke that live quite a long life?" His reply was "Yes there are people who live a long life who smoke, but there are two groups of smokers, one group will get smoking related illnesses or cancer, the other group may not. Lesley, which group are you in?" Meaning it's a Monopoly, quite frankly playing Russian Roulette. I had a Heart Attack and was put on Statins. I was not about to play Russian Roulette with my health.Would I go on Statins just because I had high Cholesterol with no Heart Attack? I would probably do my best to lower my Cholesterol naturally first and if that failed then I would go on Statins. Like I said in my previous post. I have been on Statins for 12 years and am doing well. I am checked medically once a year and everything is fine, but that is my story. Somebody elses may be different. We are all different after all

I have high cholesterol, I have for at least 10 years, its always been about 7.8. Recently I have been seen at a lipids clinic in a large teaching hospital, and advised to lose weight. As I have had high cholesterol for years I have done the low fat thing, my dad died from heart disease at 55, so for forty years I have hardly eaten any fat. I am not and have never have been on statins.
So I toddle off and have a look on here and start a LCHF diet, I have nothing to lose but weight and I am being monitored anyway. My next set of bloods were, 6.8, I even get a letter from the clinic with the results telling me to continue what I am doing, he didn't know I was on a LCHF diet.
My last clinic I saw the proff, my results were a bit higher, a quiche week , my husband was cooking, but I have lost weight.
Before your GP prescribes statins they should fill in a algorithm, which they put all your risk factors in, there are risks associated with statins and weighs it up against your risk factors. Even the head of the lipid clinic did this in front of me in clinic. If you are not sure if you should be on them have a look at, https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg181
The result of the clinic appointment I do not need statins. I did say I was a LCHF diet, he said nothing.
I think you have to find out why you have not been prescribed them, the chances are if they have filled in the algorithm you fell under the threshold. The GP should provide your results, you are not a child, to be honest, if they can not communicate with you like an adult I would change. They can not expect you to manage your health if they do not provide information and help you understand it.
