Re: cholestrol

I don't think HDL can be higher than LDL as it is what LDL turns into once it has delivered fats to your cells.. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe you should clarify that HDL figure.

The LDL levels are low. Dont thunk you need to worry about them.

Re: cholestrol

The target cholesterol levels for people with diabetes:

Your total cholesterol level should be below 4.0mmol/l.

LDL levels should be less than 2.0mmol/l

HDL levels should be 1.0mmol/l or above in men and 1.2mmol/l or above in women.

Triglyceride levels should be 1.7mmol/l or less.

Re: cholestrol

Morning

My good is 1.0 and my bad is 3.4, , should I been worried? Stupid receptionist! !!

Just want to add that according to my gp my diabetes has been reversed as my blood has been .
3.8 to 4.0 for the past 3 years. My weight loss and low carb diet has helped me maintain this. Should I be worried about my cholestrol levels?

Re: cholestrol

There's a lot of debate as to what the ideal lipid levels are. Some scientists say there is no link between lipid levels and mortality rate some say there is. There's also some debate as to what the ideal levels are, if there is a link.

The best you can do is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, do exercise, keep your diabetes well controlled and try to achieve the lipid levels as close to recommended levels as possible. I personally, would be over the moon with those numbers that you have, I think you've done extremely well.

Re: cholestrol

Thanks for your replies.

Im so glad the weight has gone and would go on record to say that i will never be that weight again! I love my life so much more now :)

I also am over the moon with my figures and most sites say 4.6 is good. Its the conflicting sites that say otherwise that cast doubt in my mind!!

Re: cholestrol

According to the DAFNE workbook
Normal ranges for lipids:
Total Cholesterol : Below 5mmol
HDL : Over 1.1mmol
LDL : Below 3mmol
Triglycerides : Below 2.3mmol
Total Cholesterol / HDL ratio : below 4

HDL has a protective effect while LDL and Triglycerides have a damaging effect and may increase risk of heart disease

Food choice to bring down you cholesterol
oily fish, fruit, veg, monounsaturated fat

Re: cholestrol

Im not far away from the quoted figures :) And I will reach them.

I eat oily fish twice and week, take omega 3 sups daily and drink sterol drinks! and use benecol, however I dont use much of it as I eat hardly any bread! I was eating ground flax seed daily with breakfast till this week but changed my strategy and now eating porridge, measured dose ;-)

As you can see from my post above for target cholesterol levels for people with diabetes that your LDL (bad) is over what it should be and your HDL (good) is sitting bang on target, did the receptionist not tell you your Triglycerides level ?

As to should you be worried, I'm afraid no one can tell you that and you have to decide that for yourself, your gp may discuss the options with you at some point.

Re: cholestrol

She did say what my trigs were but I forgot!! But I do remember her saying it was normal??

Its annoying that I succesfully control my diabetes with excercise and diet and my cholestrol is slightly out!!! :?

Re: cholestrol

I exercise most days, I'm not overweight, only eat "good" fats, eat oily fish every day and I'm in my 20s. My total cholesterol was 6 (can't remember the break down). I've never had a cholesterol reading in the 4s, so non of the advice works for me. I was put in statins a few weeks ago.

As I said, I'd be happy with those numbers, but others may not be. Best thing is to speak to your doctor if you are worried. What was your hba1c?

Re: cholestrol

The reason that I ask is because having a high HbA1c is more risky than having a high cholesterol value in terms of cardiovascular disease.

Take a look at this plot, it shows how much HbA1c affects CVD risk.
