He/she obviously wants to check the fasting one as this may be different to the spot check he/she did.

It all depends what the reading was. You could always ask the GP the reason why.

Maybe they want to do a full lipid profile (ie find LDL, triglycerides HDL), a non fasting one normally only gives total cholesterol /HDL
