As a newbie I've been experimenting with various things to try and get my BG down. One thing I'm now doing (when I remember) is to have a pint of water with a capful of cider vinegar each night before I go to bed, as I've read that cider vinegar and things like lemon juice help keep the BG down.

I seems to be working for me. :D

For example, my reading before going to bed last night was 7.0 and first thing this morning was 6.8.

Yet another useful tip that I picked up on this fantastic forum that really works. 8)

Ardberg,

Vinegar and lemon juice can help to lower the gi value of a meal, I don't know if it lowers bg on its own though. Just watch, as vinegar can irritate the lining of the stomach.

According to the book called "Vinegar 1001 Practical Uses" vinegar, like apples, should be consumed daily

The book states that apple cider vinegar is very effective on detoxifying various organs in the body, together with the blood stream. It can also aid digestion and in neutralises toxic substances.

I suffer from kidney stones and in another book I've read; "Vinegar, a guide to the many types and their uses around the home" it also recommends taking a teaspoonful of vinegar in water every day to help dissolve excess calcium and allow the kidneys to remove the matter easily through the urinary tract.

These are my main reasons for taking cider vinegar daily, if it does reduce my BG, which I'm convinced it does, then that to me is an added bonus Nigel. :D

Bottom line for me is this, before taking cider vinegar daily my BG reading first thing in the morning was always higher than my previous reading just before I went to bed and cugila and others have explained to me the reasons for this (liver dump, etc). Now that is no longer the case it must surely be counteracting these organ purges that take place when we sleep. :?

Ardbeg,

Sounds like it really works for you, more so with your morning readings. I like vinegar on my food, also like vinaigrette dressings on salads etc.

A bit about how it might work

Several research findings over the last decade have shown that having a realistic amount of vinegar or lemon juice in the form of a salad dressing with a mixed meal has significant blood glucose-lowering effects. In fact, as little as 4 teaspoons of vinegar in a vinaigrette dressing (4 teaspoons vinegar + 2 teaspoons oil) with an average meal lowered blood glucose by as much as 30%. We know from our own GI Group research shows that lemon juice is just as powerful. ‘The effect appears to be related to the acidity,’ says Prof Jennie Brand-Miller ‘because some other organic acids (like lactic acid and propionic acid) also have a blood glucose-lowering effect, but the degree of reduction varies with the type of acid.’ How does it do it? Essentially, the acidity puts the brake on stomach emptying, slowing the delivery of food to the small intestine. Digestion of the carbohydrate in the food is therefore slowed and the final result is that blood-glucose levels are significantly lower. Animal studies are also showing that acid may increase the storage of glycogen (the form that blood glucose is stored for future energy needs) in the skeletal muscles and liver, providing fuel for later use.

thanks for sharing that, Phoenix, seems like a very important bit of information (if it really is the case). I find these little snippets of handy diabetic info really useful.
Does anybody have any reason to doubt the beneficial effects of vinegar/lemon juice salad dressings?

Let me think about this one Dobbs................................................................NO! :D

I know from experience it works. Again, its not to say that it does for everyone. I am unsure if people with stomach problems can tolerate vinegar and lemon juice in larger volumes, I would imagine it may well irritate the stomach, anyone with stomach conditions would do well to check with their gp first.

Good post Pheonix!

God ****! Drinking a pint of water with 1 cap full of cider vinegar is like drinking neat malt vinegar!!! Still using it on salads as a vinaigrette, though...

Vinegar is also useful as a cleaning product, try adding to warm water when cleaning the windows, or using to clean worktops etc. Type in uses for vinegar in the google search, there are 1000's of recommendations where vinegar can be used.

Your house may smell of vinegar though, but I do like the smell, shame the Mrs doesn't ! :(
