I do not have diabetes
Hi there.

Partner is T1 and he has very clicky joints. Nearly all of them. Fingers, knuckles, wrists, elbows, knees, ankles, neck and back. Not toes yet thank goodness.

I am trying to look into whether this is linked with his diabetes or another underlying condition? I fear he is getting arthritis but again I am looking into this.

Does anyone else suffer with this? Or know anymore information?

We have mentioned this to his diabetic nurse and she just told him to try and stop.... which was helpful.

With the cold snap we just had, his knuckles suddenly were very swollen, were painful and the skin was cracking. This occurred literally over night. E45 cream has helped the skin but knuckles still swollen, very clicky and painful.

I tell him to stop which gets annoying (for the both of us). I wonder if this is just a habit now more than anything?

Any info of your experiences would be great!
Thank you :) x

I recently, shortly after I started using insulin, started to develop a clicky right thumb. I am disabled , have been since 2 strokes when I was 23, and I am only able to use the right side of my body so the neuropathy pains alongside this painful right thumb have been very difficult. I have only noticed this since taking insulin but rather than associating the change of medication , I suspect I’m far more attuned to changes. I have blamed everything obviously but due to my high reliance’s on my right hand.

All of my joints click - toes, ankles, knees, hips very badly, wrists, sometimes fingers, elbow, shoulder, occasionally neck. Most of them predate the diabetes though, and some of those joints are hypermobile. My boyfriend also has very clicky wrists, which I would attribute to a touch of RSI - he is an obsessive PC gamer. He does not have diabetes.

My suspicion would be - and it really is just a guess - that being diabetic, we are more attuned to our bodies, and consequently notice things more, because the sense of security that comes with being healthy has gone.

Keeping warm enough is important, though, in managing not only diabetes, but joint problems - the skin on my knuckles was cracking very badly every year until I invested in a pair of really good fleece lined leather gloves.

I read once that the clicking noise is a gas trapped between the joints and the noise is it being released. An usual build up to extremes may be needed to be mentioned to a gp but I read its harmless. I read it by googling it. Nothing medical or researched I'm afraid.
I guess if harmless I won't find any?
It is supoosed to be a myth that it leads to arthritis but it could be wrong. Only a joint specialist may know more?

Thank you all.

All it took was some google searching - was interested with whether it was linked but I guess that’s where my naivety kicks in.

Thank you for your replies!
