Not sure in what context you are talking about. My first suggestion is don't treat them as a diabetic patient but as a person (patient) who has diabetes. For me that distinction is very important. Not all health conditions are caused or contributed to by diabetes so it is best not to make that assumption.
The second suggestion is to realise there are many types of diabetes and man y types of people. It will depend on the type they have and the way it is being treated.
Sorry but I think your question is just too open ended (and I felt judged but that is may problem).
