I understand there is a common link between the 2, I've had some symptoms when eating wheat from bloating and IBS style tummy upsets, also on one blood test they found I had low iron and calcium levels but still after having 2 inconclusive blood results it still hasn't been officially diagnosed. I have also experienced high bg readings after eating bread - has anyone else experienced the same and how do you get an official diagnosis ? I have gone periods without eating gluten and kept fairly good readings but went for supper at a mates house last night and ate lots of gluten and this morning my tummy is all over the shop !!

Hi juicyj and welcome

I have type 1 and in November 2012 I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease. I had blood tests and it comes in two parts, the first was negative and the second part was high ( I have only recently found out the 'high' was over 100) after the 2nd endoscopy I was then diagnosed. My GP was elimanating medical conditions, because I honestly thought it was an ulcer, but it was me who suggested Coeliac after looking online for my symptoms. I knew it wasn't IBS, because my daughter suffers from that ( she was diagnosed at the age of 7). At times my symptoms were so severe I thought it was the C word, but thankfully it wasn't that. My GP says my symptoms were unusual, chronic upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss and feeling so ill at times, I couldn't eat and I really felt so bad. Apparantley some people have no symptoms at all :? you could possibly be wheat intolerant, which is not the same as Coeliac, but if it persists then please go back to your GP, but you have to still eat wheat because if you stop eating wheat, barley, rye and gluten the blood test result could be a false negative. Good luck and I hope you get some answers soon as any abdominal discomfort is not pleasant.

Best wishes RRB

Hi there

There is a common link both being auto immune diseases. My son James was diagnosed a Type 1 at 3 and a coeliac at 8 years old. His symptoms for coeliac were smelly stools, stomach cramps and weight loss. He had a blood test done and a biopsy to confirm but was told to still eat gluten til his biopsy as it would not be conclusive otherwise. On a recent clinic visit I was told that a simple blood test is all that is needed now to confirm Coeliac disease.

It looks to me that since you have had blood tests inconclusive you should have the biopsy to confirm.

Hope you get it sorted soon x

Hi after asking a doctor about this as I'm type 1 and so is my bro who is also a coeliac, and wondering if I would get it or my kids. The answer I got back was it has something to do with chromosome 11. Didn't understand too much about it other than the two are linked as with other autoimmune illness. Hope that's some help.
Richard
