Coeliac Disease.

Hi RRB, once you work out what you can and can't eat then shopping get much easier again. The products are definitely more expensive though! If you go for the supermarket own brands they are often a bit cheaper, although I don't personally think the breads are as nice.

There are more and more gluten free products coming onto the market, so the quality is improving. Hopefully the prices will soon decrease as well!

Definitely order the 'gluten free bible' from coeliac UK - it was brilliant when I first found out I had coeliacs disease. Also apply for some of the free hampers from glutafin, juvela and so on. It's honestly not so bad once you get your head round it all.

Take care, em

Depending on where people live, many GPs are now no longer prescribing gluten free bread, biscuits, crackers etc anymore because of the huge prices that the gluten free food manufacturers are charging the NHS. It is a bit alarming and for the food producers to stay in business they are now going to need to reduce their prices or rely on coeliacs buying the food directly from them which some people will do but many will now just use the internet to search how to make gluten free bread and other stuff themselves....

An Asian food supermarket is a coeliacs best friend. Many of the gluten free flours can be bought at fairly low prices. Sainsburys also sell Xanthum Gum and gluten free cereals (the cereals are expensive though so my partner only eats them when they are going on a special offer). He now has a porridge made up using some Sainsburys gluten free porridge with some rice flakes bought from Asian supermarket.

Thank you iHS ,all the information I have received has been great. I bought a GF Genius 560g seeded loaf from Tesco Metro today and it cost me £2.99, that is a horrendous price to pay. I am in work,P/T and get help because I have a child, but someone who is unemployed or in financial difficulty, then how are they supposed to survive if their GP doesn't prescribe basic GF products? I feel its really is unfair.
The Asian supermarkets sound promising and I have a Gurka shop about 15 minutes walk away, so I will try them as well. ( but I dislike porridge  )
With best wishes RRB

Just seen your post em, a big thank you to you as well...........what an eye opener it all is :o Best wishes RRB All of you have been so supported and with some really good advice too XXXXX

Hi RRB

Sorry to hear you have coeliac disease but hope you'll soon be feeling loads better after cutting out the gluten.

Just wanted to say that I get Genius bread on prescription from my GP so it's worth asking. Seems to be a bit of a lottery though.

Gluten free Oxo type gravy cubes can be bought in some of the larger supermarkets .... think name of them is Kalo... Gravy can be made combining the cubes with some gluten free flour and there you have it..... A. Worrel Thomson does gluten free gravy granules (bought in larger supermarkets (free-from section). Also, Sainsburys sell gluten free sauces for making stews etc.... Again its all in the free-from section..... Sometimes I use some instant powdered potato mix to thicken stuff.

Although loads of food does contain gluten... this is now displayed on the food labels but lots of food doesn't contain wheat flour so just look at the food labels on the packaging.

Thank you robert :) I did ask my GP when he told me the news  but he seemed a bit vauge and said the different types of products can be as long as a Tesco's shopping list, but I will defintley ask him again and soon. It is so expensive, even buying the ingredients, but at least they will last a while. Best wishes RRB
