Coffee

I drink 3 cups of coffee per day, mid-forenoon, mid-afternoon, and mid-evening. Each cup contains tsp coffee powder, some evaporated milk, and 5 Sweetex tablets. Is this ok for my type 2 diabetes

Im not sure I can help you directly, but this is what I learnt:

I take it now black or with 1 to 3 drops of 35% fat cream.

Skimmed milk has higher sugars than whole milk or cream. Lactose free (even more) - it does send the meter up!

So what works for me (tested with continuous monitor) is black expresso coffee or coffee with a few drops of high fat cream. I stay clear of sweeteners, they may not contain sugars, but some tests say they blow up insulin which contributes to further resistance.

I wouldn't use those powders to mix in water as they may contain additives.

The milk is about 10% carbs, so is something to consider changing

whole milk is considered to be more healthy, but tinned milk may be more convenient in the workplace due to longer shelf life. Condensed milk is high calorie so may promote weight gain if sedentary life.follows.

are you using 5 sweetex tabs a cup? That is very high, and you may find 2 is just as 'sweet'.

I drink about 10 cups a day, and it seems to be ok for me. There are some coffee brands that have a laxative effect so I avoid buying. I am wary of Smooth or mellow coffee since they seem to use chicory as the smoother.

I did see the description 'caramelised' in the article which implies that the heat process involved may be creating unwanted sugar compounds.

I'd ditch the evaporated milk in favour of double cream.

The only real way to be sure if it is okay for you is to monitor you blood glucose levels before and after. Different people have very different responses to the same thing.

I'd think about doing away with the evening coffee altogether or at least switching to decaf on that one for the sake of your sleep quality.

The only way you can know whether it's OK for you is to test your BG before and afterwards, and avoid anything else that might affect your levels during that time.

I found that hot semi-skimmed milk (in a capuccino or latte) produced a very quick and steep rise in BG, so I don't have hot milk in quantity anymore.

At home I use a six cup moka pot and have 4-6 doubles a day. I either have double cream or milk foam or nothing. I use one sweetener when I have cream. This combination does nothing to my BG. Your mileage may vary.

I have 2 or 3 cups a day, take semi skimmed milk and 1 sweetener and I'm now in remission. One thing I have learned over last 6 years is not to panic too much over what you eat just get portion control right and eat healthy where you can

I drink 3-5 cups a day either with a small amount of cream or else without anything. I've tried decaff and full-caff and don't find any difference.
