Hi all. I love a cup of coffee. Im reading that coffee is bad for diabetic people! Is this true? Im a three week newbie so thought i would ask :)

I have drunk only black coffee for as long as I can remember but my diabetlic nurse or doctor have never told me it's bad for diabetlics .I don't know what I would do without my morning coffee.

I only drink black coffee, i have tested effect on my Blood glucose levels a number of times (things do change so always do a few random tests on my "safe" foods).

Only way for you to know if coffee is OK for you is to test its effect.

I would suggest you keep away from the coffee shop flavoured lattes (no doubt you have seen in media reports ho much sugar one of those can contain)

If you read the 'Type 2s What Have You Eaten Today' thread you will see a lot of us drink coffee. I start the day with a mug of strong freshly brewed coffee. I use sweeteners and double cream with it. I don't usually drink more during the day, unless I'm out shopping when I might get one in a coffee shop. I am actually thinking about buying one of those coffee pod machines, but don't think I can justify the cost if I only use it once a day.

I drink several cups of coffee a day and even have a Tassimo machine. If I use milk then carbs are counted often use coconut or almond milk.

I guess caffeine can raise your blood pressure.
No glucose in ground coffee beans.
I drink de-caf but they use chemicals to extract the caffeine.
High blood pressure is very dangerous especially in pregnancy so use in moderation and enjoy! :-)

All the pod machines tend to be expensive with pods. I just bought a cheap filter machine and am happy with that. Just have decaff though in case caffeine has a BG effect. Not sure if it does or not.

Caffeine can raise cortisol and adrenaline and could potentially raise BS as well as BP of course

@dbr10 I did buy a cheap filter machine, but found the coffee was too weak and luke warm. I use an Aeropress now, but thought I might buy a cheap pod machine if I can get one for around £20 on ebay.

Several brands use a water decaffeinating process, rather than chemicals. I will only buy those.

Worth checking this, because my memory is dodgy, but Kenco, Taylors, Nespresso, Costa and possibly Dolce Gusto use water decaffing.

There are probably others.

I find good coffee raises my bg not at all (though the milk and sugar will). It raises my blood pressure a little though.
Nowadays i drink decaff with double cream and erythritol sweetener. 1-2 cups a day at breakfast.

You can also buy a reusable "pod" so that you don't have to keep buying pods (and dumping the remnants in the landfill . . .)

Must admit I wasn't aware there was two ways of extracting the caffeine out of the beans, but there was a programme on tv last year (it might have been Food Unwrapped) where they were looking at decaf coffee and the chemicals used, the scientist they spoke with said that the trace amounts left behind were not harmful to health.

Up until recently we were using Kenco Decaf Coffee but made a great discovery in Tesco's when another brand was on offer, it's called Percol and it tastes absolutely delicious, you really can't tell its decaf at all.

I like that too.

I do have as I said a pod machine though it's used mainly by the rest of the family I have a latte maybe once or twice a day. I actually prefer to use my Cafetiere. and ground coffee. Do not like decaf personally. There was a time I used to drink only tea not coffee then I ended up drinking coffee not tea but recently have been making the effort to drink more tea again starting with green tea with mint.
