hi, im a type 2 diabetic, ive been diagnosed for 16 months. still juggling meds, although i think we have my sugar readings fairly stable now.

i often suffer from really cold, painful toes. my gp's comment...'its all part of the diabetes!' not overly helpful :? ......so does anyone else suffer from this and do you have any suggestions how to deal with it.

I thought hobbits had hairy feet to keep themselves warm

Do you have your feet checked regularly? Have you some neuropathy? If your feet feel cold do they feel cold first and then painful or do they feel cold at the same time as being painful? If they feel cold first it would make sense to try to keep them warm. Two pairs of thin socks are better than one pair of thick.

have had feet checked a couple of times in the last year, do try to keep them warm. sometimes they just ache (like now) even though they dont feel cold. they can get quite painful, will mention it again at the surgery. :( thanks for your help.

Hi
I often have the feeling of my toes been cold as they are right now as i type this.
I have not had my feet checked yet but i always keep my socks on now and slippers in house where has in the past i have never had anything on my feet when i have been in the house.
I am led to understand from my diabetic nurse that this is quite normal with been a diabetic but to always check my feet every morning.
I have now been a diabetic since been diagnosed in january

Others dont seem to understand when i tell them my toes are cold and sometimes feel as though they are freezing.
:(

My feet have been cold for ages. :( Since being dx on my first check up, My gp said I had raynards dicease (Don't know if that is how its spelt) When I complained about cold feet, he said "My dear they are not cold they are ***** Icy!" I also have suffered from chillblains over the years. (My Mum used to have it in her fingers for years). How ever many pair of socks I wear its not often my feet are warm!! Often on an evening if watching tv I will tuck my feet in a blanket of have even used one of those wheat bags which go into the microwave.

Hi hobbit
You could have neuropathy, but it must be a doctor who diagnoses it. However, as a diabetic, you have the right to refer yourself to the podiatry department. How about giving them a call, explaining the problem and asking them for help. They have all the tests for circulation and nerve transmission available. In the meantime, try to get your blood glucose as near normal[5] as you can. It can't hurt and may help

Hi,
I'm a type 2, been diagnosed for 8 years now. When I was first diagnosed my toes were completely numb but managed to be cold. They are now nice and warm and very sensitive. I loosely follow a low carb regime as advocated by Dr Bernstein, I've lost 3 stone and look and feel better than ever. I would say that reducing carb intake dramatically is the way to get your toes working again. Certainly did it for me. Bernstein's book can be bought on Amazon.

Good luck!

Mike

thanks for all the advice, will book an appointment with the diabetic nurse and take it from there. going off to read up on low carb diets now :) :)
