Hi, I often find with my kids that their levels are still a bit erratic a few days after the cold goes. I think this is because all the visible signs of the cold have gone, but perhaps there is still a bit of the virus in their body and it is still having to fight it off. Leggott

his levels have been higher for about 3 weeks now dispite raising his base level. when he had the cold we kept him mainly under 10 but his levels now go higher in the evening. I am not sure if it is from the cold or if he is coming out of the honeymoon period. this afternoon he had a reading of 7.9 then 2 hours after he was 9.7 without eating.

Hi, it might be to do with the honeymoon period. After both my kids had bad colds I noticed that when they had fully recovered I needed to increase basal a little. It may be that having a virus/cold means that the body is under more pressure to fight the germs that attact it and it may be that the pancreas which is already failing is affected by this - not sure though. You could increase basal by half a unit and see if that helps. Leggott

i have increased it by 1 unit at we cant get a half unit pen (my son is 13 and has to have a solostar pen) that didnt work so i have raised it by another unit today now we just have to wait and see. He doesnt have much insulin he is on lantus and now takes 9 units a day after the 2 increases.

Hi, I don't know anything about lantus as my kids are both on Levemir along with my husband. With levemir it can take a few days after the adjustment to notice a change (not sure why). This may be the case with lantus too, so it might be worthwhile waiting a few days after increasing before increasing the does again. Hopefully someone else who's child is on lantus may be able to advise further. leggott
