Combination of Diabetic Medicine

Hi There

My wife is currently taking 3 different diabetic medicines in her treatment of diabetes.

She is currently on Insulin, 10 units in the morning & 8 at teatime which has reduced a lot over a period of time.

Also on Metformin 500mg, 2 tablets 3 times daily.

Byetta, 2 injections of 10 units 2 times daily.

Taking other medicines as well to treat other problems.

Now, although she is reasonably well, she has said that she has been getting headaches on a regular basis and running to the loo a lot and had the odd accident because her motions are very loose and not able to make it to the loo.

This started shortly after being moved to taking 2 x 500mg Metformin tablets 3 x per day from taking 1 x 500mg 3 times daily.

The reason for the increase in Metformin is that they want to get her off insulin over a period of time which has gradually decreased.

I think 12 months ago she was on 60 in the morning and 40 at teatime and we have over the 12 month period with the use of Byetta got that down to what it is today.

Prior to her being on the 10 units morning & 8 she was on 22 units and 16.

Just wondering if anybody has any ideas if the Metformin are causing the problems that she is having.

Any advice appreciated

Hal

Hi Hal.

Metformin can and does cause 'unfortunate' effects in some patients. It can take a little while to settle down but, if it is not tolerated there is the option of taking Metformin SR/MR tablets which because of the way they work are far better.

Headaches, as far as I am aware are not a known symptom of Metformin, however it is listed under Byetta as one of it's possible side effects.

I would suggest that she discusses this with her GP at the next appointment.
