Hi Lucy,
I stick to a Ketogenic diet for most of my time, but on the Sunday at the end of each fortnight enjoy myself with a chocolate binge. My levels on the Sunday are pretty easy to control - I know how much to inject for each chocolate bar and my levels stay OK. Much more difficult are the Monday and Tuesday after the binge day.
My interpretation is that I have loaded my liver with Glycogen, and until that Glycogen store is exhausted I have to tolerate an overactive Gluconeogenesis.
I can control this to a certain extent. Normally my Basal injection is 16 Units Lantus before bed. Before bed on the binge Sunday, I know that I need to add 4 Units of Lantus for each 100g of Chocolate that I have eaten. If I have binged on a lot of chocolate, this can seem like a ridiculously large injection, but I've arrived at these numbers after a lot of trial and error, and these numbers are what they are because they work
for me. With these changes to the Basal dose, my levels on the post-binge Monday and Tuesday stay reasonable, but still are more variable than usual.
I would say that if you are normally on a Keto/LCHF diet, and you step out of that diet and binge, then you would probably need an increased Basal dose to control your levels,
until you get back into Ketosis. Of course, the exact numbers will be yours.
Just speaking from my own experience, Ketosis or no Ketosis is the primary factor, and I would expect that when you are back in Ketosis then things return to your normal. I think you have the Ketonix monitor, so this should be easy to check? For me, it takes 36 - 48 hours to get back into Ketosis.
Hope this is helpful for you . . .
Regards

Antony
